It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Orwell’s 1984, but I recall there was something like the “15 Minutes of Hate” where a crowd assembles at an appointed time to look at a projected image of “Goldstein,” an otherwise unknown person they were conditioned to look at and chant something like “HATE! HATE! HATE!” for 15 minutes. When the rage meeting ended, their hatred contorted faces promptly returned to normal expressions of resignation and they silently filed out of the room to resume the rest of their day.
Decades later, I believe Orwell’s “15 minutes of hate” indoctrination has been replaced by what is called, “The Nightly News” and other network variations. It’s the only explanation for the content the media keeps shoving our way; and the blind rage of the fully indoctrinated. Ironically, those of us who refuse to hate on command are deemed “uneducated, low information voters” and “republicans” (as if the last were a bad thing).
Excellent observation.
It’s been decades since I read 1984. I didn’t remember that part. Maybe I should put it on my “read again” list. ( I need to live to be 1000 to make a dent in my reading lists! )
