What about the value of honesty, and not taking something which doesn’t belong to you? In this case, of not worrying about a truck full of merchandise parked there? It doesn’t belong to you, so ignore that truck parked there.

Japan’s society is such that there is still hastily abandoned property left just as it was when the people were forced to flee.

Exactly. There was even a test at procter & Gamble when I interviewed with them and there was a $20 bill on the floor right after we exited the group interview. We knew it was a test because there was no one in the hallway and were figuring out if we were honest enough to return it..obviously.

That is most definitely an issue to contend with. At the same time, I believe it wrong to throw unnecessary temptation in people’s face here, just as it would be wrong to leave free beers out at an AA meeting.
Undergraduate sexual harassment training at the local university stresses that men who have been baited all night by women must not have sex with those women when they pass out drunk. That is rape. But, if stealing shouldn’t count when the stuff is just sitting there unprotected, I presume it’s not rape when the woman is just lying there unconscious.
Just trying to get the rules straight. Thinking about it further, I suppose it merely confirms there are at least two sets of laws in this country. I am a victim of my middle class upbringing with my middle class morals.
