Links to Michelle forgiving Hillary? I would be very surprised if Michelle has ever publicly acknowledged the real evolution of the controversy. It would be interesting to know what Michelle, and for that matter, Barack, have said about it privately. But publicly, the dems have all adopted the Minitrue script in which birtherism arose out of nowhere as a vile, right-wing conspiracy theory.

I don't think Clinton would ever have said it, at least publicly. Her campaign, however, was clearly implicated in surreptitiously spreading the rumors, which went viral in the winter of 2008-09, as Obama emerged as a serious threat to the planned Hillary coronation. Some of this was eventually tracked back to Sidney Blumenthal, but he surely wasn't alone. The birtherism stuff originated on the 'rat side of the aisle. It went viral when, and only because, Obama stonewalled. "Shut up, he explained" is not a good response to such questions.

I'm sure Clinton would disclaim any knowledge of this. Her denial will be persuasive to people who think she is trustworthy. I don't know any such people, but I understand that there are some out there somewhere.

I don't keep a file of links. Perhaps someone will be along soon to provide one. That said, there was extended discussion and investigation back in the 2008-20012 period about the origins and evolution of birtherism. Democrats were endlessly trying to paint it as a right wing conspiracy, which overlooked the fact that birtherism surfaced as a national issue during the runup to the 2008 Democratic primary season. That, at least, is when I became aware of it. Obama was not prominent enough for anyone to have paid much attention before then, and until he ran for president, it wouldn't have mattered anyhow. So it was natural that it emerged when it did.

I actually mis-stated the years in my earlier post; it was the winter of 2007-08, not 2008-09, when the Kenyan connections started circulating online. This happened at precisely the point at which Obama emerged as a threat to HRC. The bread crumbs eventually led back to HRC operatives. But I can't give you a link.

2 Clinton supporters in ’08 reportedly shared Obama ‘birther’ story
BY DAVID GOLDSTEIN / September 16, 2016 07:29 PM

DATELINE WASHINGTON —— Two supporters of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign reportedly shared the claim that then-rival Barack Obama was not born in the United States and thus was not eligible to be president.

One was a volunteer in Iowa, who was fired, Clinton’s former campaign manager said Friday. The other was Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, according to a former McClatchy Washington Bureau chief.

The issue arose Friday as Donald Trump finally acknowledged that Obama was born in the U.S. Trump, a leading champion of the debunked “birther” conspiracy theory for years, attempted to blame Clinton for starting it when she ran against Obama in 2008 for the Democratic presidential nomination.

In fact, there were several people publicly pushing the theory, which was repeated extensively on conservative news outlets. There were the two Clinton supporters, but there is no evidence that Clinton herself or her campaign spread the story.

Patti Solis Doyle, Clinton’s campaign manager during part of the 2008 race, told CNN on Friday that an Iowa campaign worker had passed on an email about the birther conspiracy and that Clinton quickly fired him.

Solis Doyle said she’d called Obama campaign official David Plouffe at the time “to apologize and basically say that this was not coming from us. It was a rogue volunteer coordinator.”

Phil Singer, Clinton’s 2008 campaign press secretary, said by email Friday: “The idea that the Hillary Clinton campaign had anything to do with spreading the birther issue has as much credibility as the birther issue itself: none. It didn’t happen.”

Meanwhile, former McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief James Asher tweeted Friday that Blumenthal had “told me in person” that Obama was born in Kenya. “During the 2008 Democratic primary, Sid Blumenthal visited the Washington Bureau of McClatchy Co.,” Asher said in an email Friday to McClatchy, noting that he was at the time the investigative editor and in charge of Africa coverage.

“During that meeting, Mr. Blumenthal and I met together in my office and he strongly urged me to investigate the exact place of President Obama’s birth, which he suggested was in Kenya. We assigned a reporter to go to Kenya, and that reporter determined that the allegation was false. “At the time of Mr. Blumenthal’s conversation with me, there had been a few news articles published in various outlets reporting on rumors about Obama’s birthplace. While Mr. Blumenthal offered no concrete proof of Obama’s Kenyan birth, I felt that, as journalists, we had a responsibility to determine whether or not those rumors were true. They were not.”

Blumenthal, who worked in the White House with President Bill Clinton and later was employed by the Clinton Foundation, could not be reached Friday but said in an email to The Boston Globe, “This is false. Period.”

The birther issue was long the province of conservative talk show hosts and far right politicians who opposed Obama’s candidacy and then his presidency. Trump used it as his platform into politics five years ago, despite numerous reports that exposed it as false.

He reversed field Friday at the end of an appearance before veterans and former military officials who support him. But instead of ending the controversy, he fueled it further, with his claim about Hillary Clinton’s involvement.

Clinton, at a speech in the nation’s capital, said Trump needed to apologize. “For five years, he has led the birther movement to delegitimize our first black president,” she said. “His campaign was founded on this outrageous lie.”

The Trump campaign issued a news release with a portion of Solis Doyle’s interview and a link to memos back then to Clinton from Mark Penn, her 2008 pollster. One raises the issue of Obama’s “lack of American roots.” Obama was born in Hawaii. His father was Kenyan and his mother was from Kansas. Penn’s memo said, “Every speech should contain the line that you were born in the middle of America in the middle class in the middle of the last century.” ####

Just one of a number of U.S. Supreme Court cases which defined natural born Citizen as born in the country to Citizen parents.

Yes, that is true as well. The publisher's catalogue bio that described Obama was Kenyan born was almost certainly written by Barack himself. The publisher got an exec to fall on her sword and take responsibility for inadequate fact checking, which no one not in the pay of the Clintons or the DNC actually believes. And even then, it should be noted that the gal who threw herself under the bus only took responsibility for, again, inadequate fact checking. NO ONE has ever acknowledged writing the piece.

Because the author was BHO himself.

For the record, I think BHO was born in Hawaii. But he was initially dual nationality Kenyan-American, and he later became dual nationality Indonesian-American. That's why his passport, college admissions and financial aid documents would be interesting.

I have always had some sympathy for the young Barack on these points. His mom was a hotpants grad student whose pregnancy was probably a mistake; had abortion been legal at the time, BHO would never have been born. She clearly had no time or interest in raising a child. He was abandoned by his father. His Indonesian stepfather was a mixed bag but probably the most responsible adult in his early life. He ended up getting shipped off to be raised by the grandparents. He was a talented kid but he also ran with the wrong crowd, smoked a lot of dope, and seemed aimless.

I subscribe to the theory that he was a young man in search of an identity, and I suspect that he tried several on for size before settling on the BHO we came to know. It seems likely that in his early adult years he may have tried to pass himself off as exotic and foreign. The accidental American with a Kenyan father and Indonesian upbringing probably didn't blink an eye about playing around with questions of nativity and citizenship. I think he has tried to be a good father to his daughters, and given his own upbringing, that is probably something of which he is acutely conscious. That and political radicalism are the only real things in his life.

Maybe he has always carried an American passport. But we really don't know.
