High-Tax State Exodus
WSJ ^ | 28 December 2018 | The Editorial Board

...some states are booming while others are suffering a European-style sclerosis of population loss and slow economic growth.

One side effect of a strengthening national economy has been a widening disparity in state growth rates. The eight fastest-growing states by population last year were located in the West or South (Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Florida, Washington, Colorado and Texas).

Not everybody fleeing to these states is a conservative.

That’s what turns them blue.

How do you think I wound up in Texas?

I'm not alone, either.

True, but conservatives are a lot more motivated to leave blue states than liberals are.

Think twice before looking down your nose at your new neighbors.

I think the growing pattern of Illinois and California ‘awakens’ people to property taxes, stupid spending habits, and an approaching bankruptcy status. You can find various people who were true-blue believers back in the 2000-to-2010 era, and now realize the impact of liberal leadership. I think if you tested a hundred folks who left either of the affected states, and admitted they voted Democrat back in 2008 timeframe, at least half of them will admit that they now see some serious decline which all leads back to growing taxation, which occurs because of Democrats in control of California/Illinois legislatures.

At some point last summer, I watched a YouTube ten-minute conversation by some former San Francisco resident. She had grown up there in the 1960s, and done well in that era as a Republican-voting resident. But she admitted since the early 90s....there’s no effective GOP individuals in the city government and property taxes were going to kill her as she went into retirement. So she sold the house and moved to Florida (mostly for the weather). She wasn’t looking back, and she’d actually talked to others who were approaching retirement...considering the same tactic. The property tax thing staying in the Bay area impossible. I see the same thing likely to occur in Illinois.

Many Northerners are pouring into North Caroliaa and TN and taking their pensions with them...retired city workers..FDNY, ..NYPD...other city workers. Why have your pension taxed 10% or more? ...NY! CT, ..NJ...It’s Foolish!

My brother brought up this pension-to-move situation a decade ago. They were already appearing in Alabama (my home state) at that point. Between lesser taxation on the pensions, there’s usually lower property taxation. I’ll bet between permanent movement and RV-campers, there’s probably 400,000 who’ve moved to Alabama and set-up some type of permanent or long-term stay. All of this simply adds to sales tax revenue, and general profits for small towns throughout the state.

Many thousands of CA libs fled their tax-happy State year’s ago for OR, WA, CO and NM... now those wells are sufficiently poisoned, a new wave is on the move again.

One thing I’ll say for Washington state is that there is no state income tax. Property taxes can be high, though not as bad as the northeast.

Whadda ya mean are you sure? Some lefties will move to Tx./Fla and not blame leftist taxes. Just look at all the Florida retirees. I say concentrate the lefties in deep blue states by moving government functions there. Women’s march in Kona. Move the Social Security Administration there. It’s all online anyway. Hilo is underdeveloped. Passive aggressive. Paradise with island fever thrown in. Downsize while making a transfer they CAN refuse. I got a million of em’.

I left MD for FL 5 years ago. I got a $500 a month raise (MD taxes, FL no tax state). Same company, same job, just different state. AND I LOVE IT HERE!

This'll be short as it's time to head to work, but not Everyone leaving is Conservative. Luckily we didn't get Amazon, but Dallas has been turning red for a while, and it's creeping into the surrounding cities. Last election, maybe 15-20 of the races on the ballot, had an UNCONTESTED DEM running for a judge position. UNCONTESTED. I don't think there was but one or two uncontested Repubs. I left those (the Dems) blank, but that's still ridiculous that, in Texas, what should be one of the bluest states, we can't even find people to run in elections.

You might be able to find them, but that won’t make the party help them. The GOP at the party level is there to help the uniparty, not harm it.
