John Moses Browning to the rescue!
Well I will go ahead and tell the whole story.
I was taking my date to watch an Asheville Toursts baseball game. Cheap date as the admission was only 50 cents. This was around 50 years ago.
I was drving down a side road turning onto Charlotte Road when a White Pontiac convertible containing 8 Youths of the African race pulled in front of me and blocking me in.
We were in a little English Ford with the windows down which is typically the only cooling you need in Asheville during the Summer.
They all piled out of the convertible and one yelled “Chicken Shit” as they headed toward me. I immediately reached down for the Browning which was being carried illegally at the time. One of them noticed and said “He has a gun” and they all piled right back in and sped off.
I had no connections to them in any way. Never even seen them before.
I later worked with a Black Federal Agent and asked him what had made them go after me. He said most likely they had a run in with some other guys and were just looking for another White group to take it out on. He said I certainly saved us from a beating.
I also did a couple of things wrong. I should have hit the door lock first then rolled up the window then gone for the gun. What ever it did work. My date said if I had not had that gun we would have been in real trouble.
The State of North Carolina tried to prevent my saving myself but my life is mine to save no matter what the state says.
