I like that idea. The applause gets in the way. The only good things about it is that good guys in Congress get to show who they are, and the bad guys get to show who they are.

Yours is the best suggestion yet. It meets the requirements in the Constitution for the president to inform congress of the state of the nation.
I like it! Hate watching all the theatrics in the house, the sour faces, the gushing to those invited guests... symbolic emotion irritates me.
Substance is my preference.
