An eight-year-old boy who fled Nigeria with his family and is now living in a homeless shelter in New York City while his asylum application pends has been crowned the state's chess champion for his age group.
Tanitoluwa Adewumi won the state tournament for his group, from kindergarten through third grade, last weekend.
The boy and his family fled their home in Nigeria in 2017 in fear for their lives and have been living in a homeless shelter ever since while their application for asylum pends.

We need smart, hardworking people, we just need to make sure they come legally. This kid and his parents came legally and applied for asylum.

OK one prodigy does not mandate the need to amend our entire immigration system. There are millions of really smart people in the world. They don't all deserve a get out of jail free card simply because they can play a board game really well.
My mother was a really really smart motivated and compassionate medical professional. She had to wait in line for nine years to get her naturalization papers because she followed the rules and didn't ask to go to the head of the line.
She probably saved thousands of lives but couldn't play chess worth a damn.

We are happy to take the best and the brightest, as long as they pass the other requirements. It sounds like they are waiting their turn, following the asylum rules, and are escaping actual (Muslim against Christian) persecution. Congrats to the kid. I hope they become appreciative, hard-working, and America-loving countrymen.
