Microsoft announces it will shut down ebook program and confiscate its customers' libraries

Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn't making enough money, so they're shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of its customers acquired effective July 1.

Customers will receive refunds.

When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn't get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash refund for the price you paid. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some kind of f---ing software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary works, they could not have done a better job.

> I never liked, or bought, e-books. The convenience of being able to read them in low light also made my eyes hurt after a while. <

That’s why I like audiobooks. They’re a bit more expensive than e-books, but easier on the eyes.

But I guess if they can delete an e-book from your library, they can delete an audiobook as well.

Everything that is on the net can be erased by the stroke of one key.

Until they pass the blazing saddles ban and go door to door with swat teams looking for infringers.

Not that funny these days...

Read the e-book - but if you find it valuable, buy a hardback version.

You sit down to watch Blazing Saddles (or some equally non-PC movie) one evening, only to find that PC police have removed it from your library.

That's why I have my copy on DVD. Because you just know that some day THIS video will be banned. Offending the snowflakes dontcha know.

Amazon banned one of my books. It took me a few days to discover why. They said some content was freely available on the internet. It turns out the offending content was a few paragraphs from a published patent. The patent was one where I am the inventor. After I explained things to them they un-banned my book.

I back up all my digital books on a plug in hard drive which I then keep in a drawer. Good luck retrieving them.

Earthlink ISP did the same with the music you “bought” thru them. Once you quit Earthlink your music would not play anymore.

There are converters to convert a ebook to a pdf file.
I have one that takes Amazon Kindle ebooks to different formats so it is portable. I can view on my phone or computer or tablet and not just a Kindle.

This type of thing is why you don’t want a cashless society, nor internet connected cars.

This will only resonate with those who watch Asian dramas, but Warner Brothers acquired Asian Fever, which was the oldest and biggest of the 2 legal subscription services for watching K-Dramas and other Asian dramas in the United States (Viki is the other). It had 30 million subscribers worldwide. One day a couple of months ago, without notice, WB simply shut it down. In a press release it claimed it was not making money, which seemed patently false given how popular it was. Some of us suspect it was because they realized Asian programming was a competition threat to American media they didn’t want.

In any event, DramaFever had the exclusive license to a lot of the big hit K-Dramas. Americans’ access to those is gone forever.
