Katsushika Hokusai’s Iconic Artwork Bound for Japanese Currency

An instantly recognizable artwork—Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa—is set to appear on Japan’s 1,000-yen banknote. Just one of several new designs announced—others including images of industrialist, Eiichi Shibusawa; educational reformist, Tsuda Umeko; and more—the Hokusai note will depict Nobel Prize-nominated bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato on the other side. The new designs will be circulating by 2024.

The reverse side of Venezuelan notes have some very nice animals.
Available for a very nice price.

Not joking!
I have my favorite 5 Bolivar armadillos mounted on the wall.

They also weave them into some interesting shapes.

Funny it has printed “Nippon Ginko” and “yen” in english, not kanji.

The original woodblocks are long gone. The reprints you buy now are from new blocks, but very well done. I saw an original Great Wave at the Metroploitan Museum of Art in NYC. It’s only occasionally displayed, and is a dingy soiled print not larger than a sheet of 8 x 11.5 paper. So, you’re better off, if not financially better off, with the reprint.

The Great Wave shows the yin-yang of the air and water with Mt. Fuji, representing the stability of the realm, at the center. The tiny sailors will pass through the threatening wave by bracing themselves together in a group as you see them doing, while the sharp claw like edges of the wave represent the spirits of drowned sailors trying to snatch the souls of the living.

Our currency at least looks solid and valuable, like postage stamps used to look. It is getting less so gradually as the design is altered again and again in futile attempts to prevent counterfeiting.

My absolute favourite John Denver song. You can almost taste the salt spray.

You can almost taste the salt spray.

Excellent description. It is truly an inspired song. It's as if you're personally looking out over all the mysteries of beyond and below.

Ding ding, Ding ding...

It means the arrival of the Captain!

Love the video playing with this one.

It was just a couple days ago that this song was brought back to my memory, so I decided to do a little research.

Very sad and strange, the fate of Calypso after her sinking. Legal troubles, non-payments of repairs, delayed restoration attempts, the fire, the difficulty of gleening a timeline of events in all of it... it's a weird mystery with what is going on presently.

I managed to find a blurb saying that the hull had been completed in June of 2018.

And now... ?

You can taste the salt as you said. With all the info about the Moon exploration being front and center (the maria are seas!), what are the odds some news about Calypso's restoration will come suddenly, out of the "blue"? I can feel it!

Like the dolphin who guides you, you bring us beside you
To light up the darkness and show us the way
For though we are strangers in your silent world
To live on the land we must learn from the sea
To be true as the tide and free as a wind swell
Joyful and loving in letting it be.

Aye Calypso..

(Seeing this famous wave really lit it up more for me today.)

That’s Romaji (the Latinate spelling of Japanese), not English. If it were English, Nippon would be written “Japan.”

Hokusai’s ‘The Lone Fisherman at Kajikazawa’ is in the running for the most perfect painting ever painted.

Are you suggesting that somebody should put Captain Jacques Cousteau’s picture on a currency note? The Europeans might go for that.

Very nice! And much better than a certain country that has a picture of some rocks on its currency.

I hadn't thought of that, but that's a great idea, especially because he was famous for his red hat.

LOL, perfect. :)

Back in the day, I had a stick-on plate to paste into the back of the front cover of my favorite books with that painting. Frontispiece I think they called it.
