From the article:

“The Flyers’ move comes just a day after the New York Yankees decided to pull Smith’s 1939 version of “God Bless America,” which the team has played at Yankee Stadium in the middle of the seventh inning for 18 years. The Yankees said in a statement they were investigating the claims of racism in some of Smith’s past songs, and while the team has not yet made a final conclusion, it was “erring on the side of sensitivity.”

In 1931, Smith recorded a song titled “That’s Why Darkies Were Born,” written by Ray Henderson and Lew Brown, which includes the lyrics, “Someone had to pick the cotton.” There is some question about the satirical nature of the song, which was also recorded by African-American artist Paul Robeson and referenced in the 1933 Marx Brothers film Duck Soup.

In the 1933 film Hello, Everbody! Smith sings “Pickaninny Heaven,” a song that directs “colored children” living in an orphanage to fantasize about a place with “great big watermelons.”

It’s unclear what prompted both the Flyers and the Yankees to act now, considering the songs have been around for more than 80 years”.

“Pickaninny Heaven”. That has to rank right up there with “Gansta’s Paradise”.

Erring on the side of bending over and taking it up the ass from nutjobs like Almost Occasionally Coherent is a much more accurate characterization. We went from an attitude among some that “God Bless America” should be our national anthem (that was discussed extensively in the 60s and 70s) to we have to ban it because there might have been some racist elements of a song sung by Kate Smith... WTF?

Gotta destroy ALL vestiges of patriotism and nationalism; Obama “transformed” America dontcha know...

Never mind that the term “colored children” was not offensive in 1931.

It’s hard to believe anybody who did anything in the 30s didn’t do something racist or homophobic.

Because you gotta get those virtue signaling points while you can, before the 'outrage' du jour changes, of course.
