“Sometimes it seems like if it can be programmed, it can be hacked.”

That’s because it can. Nothing connected to the Internet is completely safe. I say this coming from a career in IT. Safe systems are airgapped from the Internet with no possibility of remote access, they are still vulnerable to local and physical access, but that’s infinitely more manageable. We do our best and are very successful, but you would be amazed at the sheer quantity of activity we have to defend against.

My desire would be to seriously up the penalties for illegal hacking. I’m talking FBI raids, major felonies and we take the worst ones out like terrorists if they are outside CONUS. Block whole countries or carriers if they don’t make progress. We seem to just accept hackers and try to close holes after they are discovered, but there is no effort to seriously pursue them. I’m would even entertain the death penalty for the worst offenders, say the ones who use the information to seriously harm over a certain number of people in certain ways.

My $.02
