They’re made of fairly soft volcanic stone formed naturally from compressed ash.

Some North American Indians routinely made elaborate atlatl weights from hard porphery, granite, etc and softer slate by simple pecking and they drilled holes in them using grit and river cane.

What is “they’re” made of?

The one’s I’m talking about are made of granite, an extremely hard, difficult stone to work with. I hesitate to use this website but it popped up at the top of the list, and has good pics. Cuzco, Peru

Has on display the equipment used in making snuff bottles from quartz and more.

A treadle driving an oscillating stick and abrasive sand.
Slow but sure.
