“Friend in his thirties just came down with shingles”
that’s terrible. shingles confuses me. i need to do a little research. do you get shingles only if you’ve had them? does the chicken pox vaccine prevent shingles? i’m kind of weird and could be anti vax with some things. my sister got chicken pox as an adult, right after her son was born. she wasn’t born when my older sister and i got them so she obviously missed them. they were awful for her as an adult and she’s tough like me lol. then about 4 yrs ago she got shingles in her mid 50’s. she was like “i can handle this.” yeah, she said it was horribly painful. (they are something i’d like to avoid)

I had shingles when I was about forty (30 years ago). Excruciatingly painful. Haven’t had it since, PTL.
You can get shingles only if you’ve previously had chicken pox. It always manifests only on one side of your body, with varying degrees of painful sores erupting along nerve endings.
I got shingle on the left side of my face - pretty ugly and painful, and also a danger to my sight, but the doctor kept it under control.
I’ve read if you’re re-exposed to chicken pox every 10 - 20 years, you won’t get shingles. Since chicken pox is rarely seen these days, people in general aren’t re-exposed, and for that reason there’s a shingles epidemic.
If you’ve never had chicken pox you’ll never get shingles. If you have had chicken pox and have gotten the shingles vaccine you should be ok. It’s only those who had chicken pox; it’s a re-emergence of the chicken pox virus which remains dormant in the nerve sheathing.
