Of note is the 2nd Punic war which this battle ended lasted for 17 years....hmmmm that number again.
Prior to the battle Hannibal, commanding the Carthaginians, and Scipio, commanding the Romans, actually met and Hannibal sued for peace which was rejected because the Cathaginians had broken the previously agreed truce.
The battle itself is noted for the Cathaginians sending their war elephants first. The Romans let them through gaps in their lines so they had no impact. Then it came down to the Roman calvary defeating the Cathaginian calvary returning and attacking the rear of the engaged infantry lines.

Comedian and historian, Will Cuppy (The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody) wrote of Hannibal: his strategy was to have the elephants charge in to the enemy's lines and scatter them. As often as not the elephants retreated and charged the Carthaginian lines and scattered them.
