Farewell my friend.

I had to put my cat to sleep today, he was suffering. What a good boy, I shall miss him. I know he was only a cat, but I sure did love his company. He was an unusual and interesting cat. He worshiped my wife and followed her around as if she were some kind of feline deity, but would deign to spend some time with me as well.

Damn. I sure will miss him.

So sad. I have lost canine and feline friends many times during my time ;from a s.o.b. neighbor/landlord to a father temporarily emraged by the loss of some chickens to accidental and in at least one case deliberate vehicle hits.plus the little girl who thought she was protecting me from the oil delivery man .He jumped out and ran towards the house apparently upset at having to deliver late in the day. And the insurance man insisted “a biting dog” be gotten rid of or policy cancelled.

Right now there are two little fellas sleeping on my lap .

I sure hope the place Jesus went to prepare for me has LOTS of space for my four-footed friends.

I find it difficult accepting the idea that a creature aware enough to learn and respond to individual names is just a stage prop to be forgotten at the end.

“They do seem different from other cats. More loving and mellow, imo.”

It’s true.

We never had an orange tabby, or tabby, growing up.

My kids and I found a little orange tabby kitten. He became the best cat I ever had. And that’s saying a lot.

Sorry to hear this. We’ve been there.

Before our current sweet girl, a rescue, we had a brother and sister from the same litter. (Loving to tweak the politically correct crowd, I put out an email announcing, “We are proud to announce that we have recently adopted two members of the Feline American community, one of whom happens to be black.”) (Willie was a tuxedo cat.)

Willie was a genius cat. He knew lots of words and had many vocalizations. He devised plans to try to stop us from going away (none of which were successful.) He had an attitude and was very possessive and very proud of himself. I wrote a poem for him:

Me. Me.
The best thing to be.
I’m sorry for you
‘Cause you can’t be me.

One morning he was strutting down the hall (and I do mean strutting) with a pull ring from a milk bottle hanging from his mouth. I sat up in bed, looked at him, and in my best Gollum voice, I said, “Precious.” To the end of his life, Willie would look for one of those rings whenever he heard the word precious.

He was Mommy’s boy, but he died in my arms. We really miss him and I still say hello when I pass the spot where he’s buried.

So I understand how you’re feeling.

Your boy was quite a handsome fellow, BTW.

Sympathies and condolences to you and your wife. Give yourselves enough time to grieve before you get another.

After our girl Maggie had to be put down, we would occasionally ask Willie if he wanted a new sister. He would leave the room every time.

I’ll argue with you a bit, there. They may not be people exactly like us, but they are people in their own right. They have personalities, likes and dislikes, special pleasures. They even seem to pass jobs along, sometimes. We had a cat we called Challenger, or Challie. He looked very much like your kitty. He was born the day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, and adopted by us about 6 weeks later, to give our Jeffyr kitty a companion to (replace isn’t the right word, but it’s all I’ve got) his sister, our Lady kitty, who died the day Challie was born. Jeffyr was my wife’s special Kitty. He slept on her pillow, and calmed her when she was troubled. Challie was trouble on four paws. On the way home from the pound, he decided to sit under the brake and clutch pedals, and once he got there, he found a place to get stuck that had me tear out a stub wall in our brand new mobile home. He taught my wife to play fetch. When he couldn’t get either of us to play fetch with him, he got a string, held it in his mouth, and ran around the base of a stool we had. Dropped the string, adjusted his grip, and ran again, with the end of the string dragging in front of his nose so he could chase it. Wife about died from laughing! We decided it was a good thing he didn’t have thumbs, or he’s have taken over the world. Many years later, when Jeffyr passed, Challie moved to Jeffyr’s spot on my wife’s pillow. When Challie passed, another new kitty, Opposition, took his place there, and now there is Cotterpin Doozer, who has appointed herself my wife’s keeper and caretaker, and tries to sleep on the pillow, at her feet, and plays Velcro Kitty on her chest when she’s not in bed.

Wife and I both still cry now and again for Jeffyr, and Lady, Challie, Comet & Opposition, and we know that if we live long enough we’ll be crying for Hoshi, Pixel, and Cotterpin, one of these days. And Shannon, Tupey, and Orca, the canines who also have guarded our sleep and made us know that someone loves us.

Those are just the loves for the 37 years and change we’ve been married. I commented on the Rainbow Bridge, but my comments were more for you than the FReeper who posted the poem. I’m happy you have photos of your friend. We’ve lost most of ours, over the years, and moves from my 24 years in the Air Force, among other things.

Oh, I’m so sorry. Your kitty looks just like our Ginger, whom we had to euthanize in August. She was 18, and also suffering. We’ve lost four over the last 20 years, and you never really get over that — at least we don’t.

We’ve had to do it a few times, and it never gets easier, but it’s the right thing to do.

I’m sorry you lost your kitty...such tiny parts of the Creation leave giant holes when they’re gone.

Sorry for your loss.

I’ve lost two cats recently. One was 21 years old. He chose to go off into some bushes and expire. The other was about 2 years old. She just disappeared. Both losses occurred within 3 weeks of each other.

Condolences, rlmorel. I have one, Cosmo, who looks just like your cat. My wife gives him medication rubbing on his ears twice a day. We have two others - Lilly and Isabella. Cosmo and Lilly are deaf (getting old). Isabella has 3 legs. It’s tough to loose a pet. We’ve had to put down many throughout the years. Thanks for posting. I’m sure you’ve been a good shepherd.

Our girl is a rescue, and at some level she seems to know how fortunate she is to have people, even if she did get weird ones.

I just got up from a Saturday nap, where two of my three little companions slept on the bed with me. They are beings, with souls but no spirit. No matter, they are not limited to their temporal time with us, they are continuing in eternity. I thanked God for the little companions He has sent, as I am certain you do too. That is a veautiful little being!
