Walmart employees aren't paid extra on Thanksgiving, shoppers threatening boycott

Walmart shoppers are threatening to boycott the store after discovering employees aren't paid extra to work on Thanksgiving.

Instead, Walmart offers them 10% and 15% discounts to shop in its store. The 15% discount is only available Dec. 5 and Dec. 6.

Walmart said the policy has been in place for three years.

"We simplified our paid time-off policies in 2016 to combine vacation, holiday, sick and personal time into one bucket," Walmart said in a statement. "As part of that change, we no longer offer holiday pay. We did this to give our associates greater flexibility and more choice to use their time off when and how they want to. Also as part of that change, associates can now roll over and cash out unused time off at the end of the fiscal year."

“Hell I worked Christmas day and New years eve and day for $1.25 per hour.”

And I did the same for 90 cents an hour, as a waitress. But I was treated well by my employer, and the scheduling made sense. You don’t even know the precise issues I was alluding to because it wouldn’t be appropriate to be specific online, so there’s no need to jump on me and swear at me.

“Boycott means fewer folks I have to deal with...and that’s good.”

And the fewer folks you have to deal with = less money being spent = lower profits = layoffs. But enjoy your solitude.

My nursing job gets holiday pay.

And I don’t shop Black Friday, and I consider Black Thursday a crime against society and the family.

No holiday pay? Hey, you get a break at the company store.

So the government should decide how much employees get paid?

Same with my firefighter hubby. We used to have our holidays on whatever days he had off. We just worked around his schedule.

In the 25 years I worked as a firefighter... I worked basically every Christmas and Thanksgiving. When I wasn't scheduled to work there was almost always a trade or overtime opportunity. And we celebrated our holiday on which ever day was convenient. No one considered it to be much of a hardship that I am aware of.

“Amazon is the same way.”

I agree. My brother did seasonal work for them a couple years, and the situation was abusive. I shudder when I see the new Amazon interviewing employees; they make it sound like they died and went to Heaven. I realize every company has the right to make its own rules, but there has to be some basic respect of other human beings.

Auction shift slots off to employees. Increase pay to fill slots; decrease pay to reduce demand for slots.
Everybody’s happy.

Ultimately, that is probably what they do.

Why are stores open on Thanksgiving anyway?

To service the tens of millions (or more) who don't even know what Thanksgiving is.

All associates are employees, but not all employees are associates. Associates are a specific title within the company.

This policy, which is fine, would allow an America hater, like, say, Kapernick, to take his holiday on another day.

There is nothing wrong with this policy. They get to pick when to take their time off. (There STILL wouldn't be anything wrong with it in a real free market, which we aren't, but even in our fake free market, this is fine.)

Bobby Jo, Billy, and Merle, you have been promoted! You are now associates!

Wow! Kool! How big of a raise do we get?

Actually, from now on you get to work on holidays for your regular pay, no overtime.

Hubby did 33 years. If he was scheduled to work a holiday we just left it at that and celebrated on a different day. Yeah, a lot of the younger guys with no families would always take the OT pay to let someone who requested off off. There was always someone who wanted to work. Of course hubby worked for KCFD, a really large department.

No they’d probably still have to work. Gotta get the store ready for the mob scene. Best case scenario they work very late Wednesday. Funny how there’s always this griping about the big box stores. Nobody ever complains about the movie theaters, convenience stores, and gas stations that are open. Not to mention all the folks on the job so you can watch the parade on TV. People work on Thanksgiving. LOTS of people.

Big deal 10-15% discount. Up it to at least 30% or higher for select dates. Then again a lot of Walmart employees could stand to up their game on the job. Asking for assistance in store is a crap shoot with them.

A crafting friend of mine works at Walmart. The employees are treated like absolute CRAP, and not just during the holiday season.

Our daughter worked for Walmart for years and loved it. She took advantage of many perks that were offered to her, such as being able to transfer to a different store when they moved, educational benefits, and also many promotional opportunities. they also offer employment to people who other places will not hire. It is a big corporation and obviously not all of her coworkers and supervisors were exceptional people to work with, but the system and organization was great which is why the company has thrived.

” they also offer employment to people who other places will not hire.”

There is that. My first thought when I hear about people who are being treated badly is, “Go find another job.” Then I realize some have no skills that make it easy to move.

In our local Walmart we have employees who’ve been there for 30 years, and are proud of that. (But they aren’t happy.)

Anyhow, I’m glad I’m retired.
