They are extremely brief spikes in electromagnetic radiation detected by radio telescopes, lasting no more than a few milliseconds at most. But in that time, they can discharge more energy than 500 million Suns. That assumes that the energy is being emitted in all directions, rather than it being a spinning source which has a tightly focused beam of energy passing across us.
