When you dine on curry and baked apples, enjoy the fact that you are eating something that could play a role starving -- or even preventing -- cancer.
New research from The University of Texas at Austin identifies several natural compounds found in food, including turmeric, apple peels and red grapes, as key ingredients that could thwart the growth of prostate cancer, the most common cancer afflicting U.S. men.
Published online this week in Precision Oncology, the new paper uses a novel analytical approach to screen numerous plant-based chemicals instead of testing a single agent as many studies do, discovering specific combinations that shrink prostate cancer tumors.
"After screening a natural compound library, we developed an unbiased look at combinations of nutrients that have a better effect on prostate cancer than existing drugs," says corresponding author Stefano Tiziani, assistant professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Dell Pediatric Research Institute at UT Austin. "The beauty of this study is that we were able to inhibit tumor growth in mice without toxicity."
The researchers first tested 142 natural compounds on mouse and human cell lines to see which inhibited prostate cancer cell growth when administered alone or in combination with another nutrient. The most promising active ingredients were then tested on model animals: ursolic acid, a waxy natural chemical found in apple peels and rosemary; curcumin, the bright yellow plant compound in turmeric; and resveratrol, a natural compound common to red grapes or berries.
The new research paper also demonstrates how the plant-based chemicals work together. Combining ursolic acid with either curcumin or resveratrol prevents cancer cells from gobbling something that they need to grow, glutamine.

Has anyone heard of Black Seed Oil?
Radioactive Iodine pellets injected into prostrate eliminates cancer also.
Yes, one of my friends had that treatment and is doing well!
Tumeric is powerful in massive doses. As is Vitamin C. I think there was an article a while back about a Dr at Eastern Va. Medical School doing research on Vitamin C and getting amazing results.
Instead of eating apple skins, which are sprayed with insecticides, ursolic acid is also present in cranberries and prunes, both of which I like.
Mark for later reading.
Back home in India, we ate massive amounts of curry whose main ingredient is turmeric, prostate cancer was rare.
Most my older relatives in India died of heart disease or diabetes, both from lack of aerobic exercise and eating too much refined grains.
And there is a tribe living in Kathiawad region in western India who eat locally grown cinnamon with their food, and diabetes is totally absent among that tribe.
Before you start eating apples by the truckload https://content.selfdecode.com/ursolic-acid/
If i was trying a combo I would go with Tumeric and Red wine
I spot a trend with your posts. Should we be worried for you?
Tannins and pectins are the commonality it seems?
Ping for later
Thank you for that, Non Value Added, but currently, I do not have that concern. I do have a somewhat enlarged prostate, though, and should that eventually change (possibly due to inflammation often encouraging cancer in the long term), I wanted to know more and share what I could immediately to help others.
I fear at some future point you will see me posting from research directly on myself, and not others, for something serious. I will be asking for prayers from my family here at Free Republic, when that happens.
I can say that some of my postings have been due to my wifes issues, but those have generally been more benign health study postings.
We have too many wonderful people on this site to not help each to help themselves. After all, we do a good job of that in many other ways.
May God Bless and Guide each of us.
I had an enlarged prostate and was given a small prescription pill plus I bought pumpkin seed oil capsules and Costco “Prostate Plus”. after one month it was cleared up. About 5 quarterly visits, no problems..
And the prunes will make you and keep you a regular guy.....if you get my drift.
But can also cause other forms of cancer. Not a good choice for someone young.
My hubby was 50 when he got it. He had surgery.
turmeric is great for digestion too. keeps bad gut bacteria down.
I came across this recently. Sounds wonderful, I’ve been taking the capsules since end of Oct. and still above ground. Wife is taking it and she says it helps (RA). I’m going to try to post this list, hope it works.

Forgot to include you on this reply in my post 18 this thread.
I am in my early 60’s. I have had an increasingly enlarged prostate since the age of 40. Over the years I have tried a lot of medications and herbals. When things got so bad I was getting up 8-10 times a night, I started to look in to what foods and edibles might exarcerbate the nocturia, and what might calm things down. I started a food diary and started to record what foods I had, and as much as I could, ingredients. And I took note of how many times I got up at night. I noticed bananas really seemed to make things worse. So I stopped eating them. Green beans and peas got me up lot too. I thought spicy stuff with chillies would be bad but it wasnt the case. I took note of anytime I only got up a few times, even after drinking a lot of water just before bed ( not drinking fluids hours before sleep is recommended as a nocturia preventative, but it never worked for me). Well I noticed the strange effect, that after a meal of chinese food, specifically mongolian lamb, that not only did it make me thirsty, but I would only get up to pee once or twice at night. I put two and two together and realised it was likely the monosodium glutamate that seemed to be the ingredient lessening nocturia. I ate nothing but mongolian lamb and rice for 1 week for dinner and sure enough only got up around two times a night. Sometimes only once. Experimenting with other foods and foodstuffs I found that mozarella cheese also inhibits nocturia and also corn starch. So I eat quite a few evening meals through the week consisting of homemade pizza and homemade fruit sauces with corn starch for desert. Not only do I not get as bad nocturia, I dont get that rotten feeling of your bladder pressing on your pubic bone as much after urinating due to not emptying bladder. Hope somone else can try these tips and give feedback. Prostate induced nocturia is a very draining malady
