The impeachment battle is shifting to the Senate ahead of a weeks-long trial expected to get underway next week. With the House voting Wednesday to transmit the articles, Chief Justice John Roberts and senators are expected to be sworn in on Thursday. A fierce rules fight and opening arguments will get started on Tuesday. Though the outcome of the trial is pre-baked, the high-profile proceeding, the third in the chamber’s history, will put a spotlight on a handful of key potential swing votes, as well as the 2020 contenders.

And when the Dems violate the rules and bring in electronics or get up and walk around, and leave the floor, what is the turtle going to do?

Though the outcome of the trial is pre-baked

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

And will all the Senators who are running for president suspend their campaigning to sit quietly in the Senate chambers for a few weeks? I doubt it.

Nothing.

McConnell is not presiding, CJ Roberts is.

And he will do what his masters command him to.

This will be Kabuki Theater, with full makeup, in slow motion with stylized movements, and flute and drum accompaniment.

They are required to, and should they take a day off, they could be required to sit out of the rest of it.

If they are going to keep saying that they are "jurors" or "tri-ers", then they have to be there for the entire thing, or lose their vote.

I doubt any would do so while the Senate is in session. They will like do whatever they can between sessions. I wouldn’t expect any to travel anywhere though.

"McConnell is not presiding, CJ Roberts is. And he will do what his masters command him to."

That's not comforting, but accurate. Roberts is whole owned by the Deep State and another reason to worry that this trial is not a lock for acquittal.

Perhaps they should be sequestered 2 to a hotel room with no entertainment except pre 1970’s children’s movies.

It may be baked this time, but this type if proceeding must be shut down. If there we’re THREE less Republicans in the Senste, we’d be looking at a slam dunk impeachment because the opposing party simply doesn’t like the President. You don’t need a coup, you just have to be majority in both House and Senate. This is a terrible precedent and should be shut down with penalties.

I heard where the witnesses allowed to testify will be voted on, with a simple majority vote. I think the Republicans have 4 more senators. BUT, they include several RINOs, so who knows how it will go.

That seems like a really screwed up way to figure it. What if the Dems had the majority? Only the witnesses they liked would ever get to testify. Talk about a lynching.

I hope those RINOs don’t cross over.

I can just see the liberals getting 20 witnesses to the President’s 2.

Makes Cruz’s option of an equal number of witnesses for and against sound reasonable.

In the local news they interviewed some stupid college-aged gal about what she thought of the impeachment.

“Well, at least they are doing something. And hopefully it will make things things better for us.”

no need to suspend campaigns - McConnell said a week or more ago they will only meet 5 hrs or so a day for the trial, so senate can accomplish other work too.

Schumer will have a clear majority for rules, at least 49-51 if not worse.

Bad moon rising here.

That is simply not true. To convict any person who has been impeached (i.e. to remove them from office), you need a 2/3 vote of the Senate - 67 votes. That isn’t going to happen, not unless TPTB decide that now is the best time for Bosnia x 1,000 all over this country.

Take Lamar Alexander off that list. He’s already said he’s retiring. NO MOTIVATION to do the right thing.

He’s been a RINO forever, and the boilerplate email that always comes back is “I really appreciate your opinion, but go jump in the lake, ‘cause I’m voting the way I want, and you can’t do anything about it, cause I can squash my GOP challengers.” (Paraphrase. More accurate than Schiff, but still a paraphrase...)
