Amazon founder Jeff Bezos buys 'most expensive home' in Los Angeles

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has bought a Beverly Hills mansion from media mogul David Geffen in a record-breaking transaction for Los Angeles, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The world's richest man is said to have paid $165m (£126m) for the property - known as the Warner Estate - which would make it the most expensive home in the Los Angeles area.

It beats the previous record set last year when Fox Corporation chief executive Lachlan Murdoch bought the Chartwell estate in the city's Bel Air neighbourhood for $150m (£115m).

The 9.4-acre Warner Estate was built in 1937 by its namesake, Warner Bros Studio boss Jack Warner, and is kitted out with huge terraces, gardens, guest houses, a tennis court and a golf course.

It is listed in The Legendary Estates of Beverly Hills book, which was quoted in the Journal as saying: "No studio czar's residence, before or since, has ever surpassed in size, grandeur, or sheer glamor the Jack Warner Estate on Angelo Drive in Benedict Canyon."

In 1990, Mr Geffen purchased the property for $47.5m (£36m), which was also a record for Los Angeles at that time.

He then reportedly gutted the home except for a wooden floor said to be the one that Napoleon stood on as he proposed to Josephine.

I was surprised to see it’s not a beachfront property...

“...I’ve often said having ridiculous amounts of money is a complete curse in this life...”

I’d like to try it for about a week... to be able to get a night’s sleep and not have to worry about the mortgage... keeping the lights and heat on...food on the table... all the bills paid.

Gimme a week of that and I’ll let you know if it’s a curse or not.

You can’t take a walk on the street, go to the store, walk on the beach or do anything without security

Why would anybody want to live like that?

Jesus has had plenty to say on the subject

Jesus was the wealthiest man to ever walk the planet (treasures in heaven), and everybody knows what happened to him!

There are other problems, like those who always asking something from you and how it divides families. The best way to live is not to have too little nor too much.

I think Gates is putting his money where his mouth. I would consider testing the viability of hydrogen to Bevan act of service.

If he can make it work economically, it becomes a real replacement for hydrocarbons instead of fanciful ones, like renewables.

My mother died a couple years ago, so I’m officially an orphan. Is he looking to adopt?

I don’t want to be adopted by him, but I’m willing to be like Kato Kaelin. I will gladly live in his pool house.

Money is a touchy subject. He takes the family on trips in his plane or yachts, but even at our destinations, when we go out to dinner everyone pays for their own meal. But still, he paid for the several thousand dollars in jet fuel. :)

I would have to be destitute to even think about actually asking for money from them. We each have our own path. I’m quite satisfied with mine.

They’re also strong Christians and it shows in their actions. They are more busy than most of the people with jobs that I know. :)

Carnegie built libraries. ..Bezos? Not sure. I do know he has promised a billion to build small houses in CA geared toward homeless. With combined land and infrastructure costs, I heard it will only build about 1,500 units. .... The Petronas Towers cost about 1.5B. .... Think about how many homeless that could handle.

Yeah but is he looking at a $644million yacht?

There's a cable channel that highlights custom luxury yachts........It's amazing what they can build for the people who can afford them.

Here in Chicago we had the Projects...

they became so dilapidated and dangerous that

they all had to be torn down.

I'm sure most big cities have had similar experiences.
