A few days later, I was told that they cafeteria had changed its policy. When I was serving in the Navy (1961-'64) and my ship was homeported in Norfolk, I had weekend liberty and caught a ride with a Petty Officer and a couple of shipmates to New Jersey to visit home. In Delaware we stopped at a small diner to grab a bite. The staff informed us that they would serve our black shipmate, but that he could not come inside and sit with us. We complained, and they threatened to call the police, which hassle we didn't need. We ended up eating in Jersey instead.

We were from the East Bay in California, you talk about a cultural shock, blacks were not allowed in the stores at the same time as Whites. Husbands Door Gunner was Black, trusted His Life with him for a year. Tried his best to locate him for several years but was unsuccessful.
