The guitar player featured on Bread's Guitar Man is Larry Knechtel, who also played the piano on Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, including the piano solo that introduces the song.

Larry Knechtel was an extremely accomplished musician, a member of The Wrecking Crew, and performed on many hit records. He died in 2009 at the age of 69.

Not quite. Original member Robb Royer is still alive and well living in Nashville.

OK, all those pictured in this YouTube link.

David Gates “bought a ranch”

Which turned out to be a great idea, as opposed to the rest of the band members who all bought the farm.

I read an interview with him about 25 years ago and they asked about the ranch career. His answer was something like, “I spent a lot of time in hotels, had to do something with my time”.

Bread was my go to tape to play when taking dates to the drive in. I remember the songs but not the movies.
I always felt like I owed Bread a lot of thank you’s.

Surprised no one has mentioned “Just Like Yesterday” written and sung by James Griffin.

Great song, David Gates it wrote for his Dad. Aubrey is hauntingly gorgeous.

This has always served as an example of perfect song construction. The harmonies of Griffin and Gates are some of the best ever, and the many changes in tempo deliver incredible highs and lows....and chills. It’s a shame this song didn’t get more airplay as it is certainly one of their best.

Great songs.I dated a cute girl named Linda back then when these songs were popular. She wore cowgirl boots and had the cutest set of bow legs you could imagine.I was tore up over that girl but her X boyfriend knocked her up and I hit the trail.Thank God.

Gates went to the same high school in Tulsa as Leon Russell and Anita Bryant. That’s pretty stellar company!
