Although an American by birth, my maternal grandfather spent 2.5 years as a surgeon on the Somme in WWI with the Royal Army Medical Corps.

My paternal grandfather was a junior officer on the USS New York (BB-34).

I had three uncles at Guadalcanal, one onshore and two offshore. My dad and his twin brother were on their way to be landing craft drivers in the invasion of Japan when the war ended.

Fortunately, everyone came home safely. We VERY much appreciate the fact that so many didn't come home at all.

My dad was older when I was born and served in WWI. He served in France with a combat engineering unit. I don’t know which division, but he trained at Ft Dix when it was Camp Dix.

The REAL Old Navy, not some ____'n T-shirt store.

Dad was a gunny with 11th Marines on Peleliu, then a DI back at the island, then married my Quaker Mom. Now there's a mix...
