If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

Posted on 07/10/2020 8:18:42 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

I love all kinds of music and I know everyone’s taste of music is different but if forced to pick only one group since 1970 that was awesome, encompassed uniqueness and range and just fun music overall it would be Earth Wind & Fire. I just loved how they mixed R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Latin and Disco and had lyrics to many of their songs that had meaning and message. Maurice White was a genius and his instrumental arrangements for the bands top hits was bar none. Great Car music

‘That’s the Way of the World’ ‘

Fantasy’

‘Reasons’

Getaway’

‘After the Love is Gone’

‘Serpentine Fire’

‘Shining Star’

‘Can’t hide Love’

Boogie Wonderland’

‘Gratitude’....etc

Wow. You're a Bread fan?
They were great despite being accused by women of being “mushy.” Underrated by everyone, but their music was real “music,” but not by today's “standards.” They packed all their concerts. Only one left is David Gates and Robb Royer. Would not rate them as such, but they deserve their place.

How could you list Earth, Wind and Fire top songs and not include one of their biggest hits “Sing a Song”???

The Moody Blues.

Started following them in 1966, the year I graduated high school, with their album, Days of Future Past, and the lead song, Nights in White Satin, which put them on top of the charts for the next decade.

I was blessed to be able to see them in Las Vegas in 2016, on their 50th anniversary tour and my 50th high school reunion.

Best rock and roll band ever.

It doesn’t seem like 1970 could be 50 years ago.

It has to be the Osmonds. They never retired or broke up from what I remember.

If we are going by hit songs, then my pick won't be popular. But, if we are looking at bands that released consistently strong albums over a long period of time, then my pick is XTC. Other than their first two albums, which had their moments but were ultimately just quirky, XTC's catalog stands up well to this day. From 1979's Drums and Wires to their final album in 2000, Wasp Star, the band produced consistently strong and varied albums.
