Americans Can’t Stop Mask Debating
Kottke ^ | 7/29/20 | Jason Kottke

Posted on 07/30/2020 3:53:47 AM PDT by Libloather

A compilation of TV news clips of people saying “mask debate” (which sounds very much like another unrelated word when spoken — try saying it out loud right now to see what I mean), stitched together by the folks at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It feels good to laugh at infuriating things sometimes.

BTW, the actual debate over masks will continue to wane - science and then culture will win most people over and it’ll just become a normal thing that most people do in public all the time, like wearing shoes or carrying a bag.

Trump: The Radical Leftists want to take away your freedom!

Voters: Why? The doctors in your administration are already doing a bang-up job of that.

Masks cover the primary communicative tool of societal interplay. They are a major step toward anonymous discourse in which no one is responsible for themselves.

They also obscure facial expression and provide an image of fear and repression. Being gagged or muzzled has never been considered to be a good thing. It usually means that you’re being held prisoner.

Except that you don’t get accosted by police for failing to wear a tie.

There are masks with “windows” over the mouth. These were originally developed as an accessibility measure for deaf people, so they can read lips of their hearing friends/family. Also, there are clear face shields with cloth around the edges to enclose the face and provide filtration without obscuring features.

You can still see people’s eyes above the mask, and some expression.

I read somewhere that the practice of covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough is a legacy of the 1917-1919 influenza pandemic. Perhaps wearing masks in public will be a legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic. As we’re taking half-hearted measures to stop the spread, that outcome (of mask wearing culture) is becoming more likely.

LOL!
The silliest thing the media has ever done.
The “mask debates” are just useless lunacy.

Which is why Trump needs to set a firm expiration date on New Normal.

Masks have been quite common in Japan for decades.

Do they work? Keeping the aspirant spray down, yes they do but for inhalation purposes you need a respirator with a micro bio filter. And I’m not even sure that works against viral pathogens but when I see scientists working behind glass isolation booths in a negative pressure room with gloves and respirators on maybe it does but one would have to go to the extreme in order for it to be effective.

That said I prefer not to share my aspirants as I walk about a store. So I wear a mask. Until I get tested and I prefer not to unknowingly shed because I care not to share.

If we were wearing masks in the eighties Clinton may not have been president and “read my lips” Bush would have two terms.

Masks are moderately effective (70 to 90%) in short-term risk situations such as grocery store shopping to prevent the spread of Covid to strangers.

In longer term situations such as classrooms and offices where people in the space breath the same air for six to eight hours, their effectiveness is near zero.

“Masks have been quite common in Japan for decades.”

Masks are common in China, too. America isn’t Japan or China. We’re audacious people who started the best country on God’s green earth by being bold. If the Pilgrims and Founding Fathers were such wimps we wouldn’t be here. It’s disgusting what we’ve come to — how low we’ve sunk.

“I care not to share.”

Your virtue signalling is ... well, I was going to say “nauseating” ... but I won’t. But as long as it makes you feel smug ... good for you.

If vaccines are going to be delayed until 2021, masks for general use are rather pointless since more than half of Americans will have been exposed to Covid by then.

Masks merely hinder spread. Hindering vaccine release counteracts mask effectiveness.

Mask wearing is also and possibly mainly a sign of surrendering ones freedom and just becoming one more willing and compliant peasant being prepared for the coming NWO.

There is no evidence masks work and they may actually increase spread. Feel free to move to China where they take the kind of measures you seem to want including welding people into their buildings to die of starvation. Oh and by the way those measures didn’t work either because it is a virus that is spread in the community. I guess if you nuked every hot spot you might make some progress....

News flash. You still share because the masks are ineffective. But you can feel good showing folks how much you care. Masks are the liberals dream - you get to show how much you care without really doing anything useful
