So what? They reap what they sow.
Timmy and his muzzie buddies apparently got closer to the building.
The Top Sergeant of the Marine Detachement aboard the USS JFK while I was on it was the senior enlisted killed in that attack (Sgt Maj Frederick Douglass.)
I remember reading an account of it when it happened, and they had his picture...I couldn’t remember his name, but when I saw that face, I remembered who he was.
I was at a party in the walled in USMC compound in Alexandria, Egypt back in 1977, where the USMC embassy detachment had invited the entire ship to their compound to party, and it was a wild one, indeed. There were thousands of men there, and I went into a narrow, single room bathroom with some dilapidated shutters over the toilet tank. I was pretty hammered, and as I was peeing, I heard someone getting a new butthole ripped outside the window.
I casually opened the shutters to look out, and it was Gunnery Sgt Douglass who I knew from the ship, completely dressing down some terrified young marine.
As I peered out and took this scene in, he turned to me with a set of intense, dark eyes and said “If you don’t close that window and mind your own business, I am going to come in there and kick your ass.” (or something like that)
Needless to say the shutters went click-click and I went about my business.
some six year later, reading the Boston Globe (He was from the South Shore) and seeing that picture, it was those same intense eyes peering out from the newspaper.
He was, by all accounts, a remarkable man.
