Over 44,000 people have signed an online petition to “place Lebanon under a French mandate for the next 10 years” as of Thursday afternoon.

The petition on the community petition website Avaaz was reportedly set up by Lebanese citizens on Wednesday following the explosion that rocked Beirut on Tuesday, killing over 140 people and injuring more than 5,000.

“Lebanon’s officials have clearly shown a total inability to secure and manage the country,” the petition reads. “With a failing system, corruption, terrorism and militia the country has just reached its last breath. We believe Lebanon should go back under the French mandate in order to establish a clean and durable governance.”

Dima Tarhini, from DW’s Arabic department, said the petition had been circulating widely on Lebanese social media.

“That’s how desperate some Lebanese are,” she said. “So much has been lost from where there was already so little. They lost their homes, they lost their properties, they cannot save their children. They don’t know what to do.”

France controlled the Middle Eastern country from 1920 to 1945 under a mandate set up after World War I. …

Why, it’s the right kind of colonialism. By popular demand, of course.

I read somewhere that certain African countries are considering contracting their governance to European countries.

I think money may be involved...

A bit like volunteering to be taken care of by your rich uncle.

44000 is nowhere near enough, unless it is coronavirus deaths and then 44000 could get Lebanon completely shut down.

“I read somewhere that certain African countries are considering contracting their governance to European countries. “

I wouldn’t touch that with a 10 foot pole.

Actually Zimbabwe voted to give reparation to white farmers whose land Mugabe stole. Only problem is Zimbabwe doesn’t have any money, so they’re asking European countries to help pay for the “reparation”.

Not a good idea. France would probably surrender to the Lebanese government.

Yep, it took over 50 years, but better late than never to realize that their native people are simply TOO CORRUPT to run those countries, and the best they ever had it was under the Europeans. If the people in those countries are serious about going back to this type of management, they just may find themselves being fed and living longer than their 45 year average.

What’s next Algeria ? The French don’t seem to be able to control that Moslem minority who have been allowed to take over and control certain sections of their cities plus are busy vandalizing Christian and Jewish edifices as well threatening them.

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Merkel may be up to the task, there is precedent.

Actually Lebanon was doing alright under their Christian president before he was assassinated. He was well liked and competent so the muzzie killed him and plunged the country into chaos. Made it easier to use as a base for war against Israel.
