Brucellosis is a wicked pathogen. It causes abortion, blood dyscrasias, severe joint inflammation, blindness, and organ failure. I encountered it infrequently in practice from cattle and dogs...later just in dogs once it was eradicated from cattle. I was always in fear of contracting the disease after I had treated a cow or dog that was positive for the disease. Even though I was careful the danger was still there. I know of two veterinarians that had to quit working because the symptoms of the infection were so severe.
