I would prefer a more scientific nomenclature, say combination of the year, the order of its appearance, and a variable to match it's maximum intensity. For example, 20203D would be the second tropical depression for 2020, 20205T would be a tropical storm but the 5th tropical depression of 2020, 20209H would be a hurricane but the 9th tropical depression of 2020. And maybe add a suffix A or P so we know if it's an Atlantic storm or a Pacific storm.

Something like that?

The NHC in the hurdat2 database does have something along those lines you suggest.
