“They offered a translation of the tune so thousands wrote in for the translation.”
One needs to be careful about those quickie translations. I just had a ten-minute conversation with a native speaker of Japanese just about the words, “Ue o muite arukou.”
Let’s face upward as (I) walk, so the tears won’t spill.
Sort of like an English speaker talking to himself might say something like, “Okay, dude, let’s keep your chin up.”
That’s not too bad, though. Last I checked, there was an entire web site dedicated to working out a translation for the Momoe Yamaguchi song, “Ii Hi Tabidachi.”
I don’t think it can be done, though.
I’m late to the party but, here’s one that was a huge hit and hasn’t been mentioned.

On a side note, I was hoping someone would help me restore my failing memory.
Sometime in the late 1990’s I just happen to meet a guy that was interested in my business. We talked for sometime and it turned out that he knew my dad, very strange connection. It also turned out that he was an Artist. He was a black singer/songwriter and when he told me the “Song” he wrote/performed, I immediately recognized the song. For some stupid reason I said “So, you’re a one hit wonder?” I still feel bad for that. He was the nicest guy you would ever meet.
I have racked my brain, off and on for over 20 years trying to remember his name and the song.
All that I can recall is that it was a Motown song, hugely popular and he told me that he was still performing live in Ocean City MD, circa 1990’s.
I know if I see his name or the song, I’ll be able to close this gap in my memory and hopefully grant him more respect than I initially showed him.
We wish we could join you in your bourgeois decadence but we have been relegated to the lime caves, turning bottles of champagne. The monks run a tight ship but we are hoping for accidental spillage when they are at Vespers.(our only source of hydration, meager as it is).
The both of us were too poor to watch Monty Python.
We had to watch Benny Hill on a cracked mirror we held up at the neighbor’s window while sleet and flaming frogs pelted down upon us.
If we were lucky.
And look how normal we both grew up!
Of course I have. But they did not make the Billboard Charts, Making Jimi technically a One Hit Wonder, along with The Grateful Dead. "Touch of Gray" was their only billboard chart hit.
At least you were happy then.
