Whiskey lovers, now is your chance to get your hands on the biggest name in bourbon — but you’ll need plenty of luck to grab a bottle.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board opened the annual lottery for Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery’s bourbons and rye whiskey.

The most coveted release is the Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Straight Bourbon 23 Year Old. Sold for $399.99 a bottle, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has only 23 bottles available — 18 for individuals, and five for bars, restaurants and clubs.

The state has about 1,900 bottles of other Van Winkle bourbons and rye whiskeys available in the lottery, which range in price from $89.99 to $249.99.

I’m in a Total Wine lottery for either a Blanton’s or a Pappy’s (not the 23). Will find out in Feb. I don’t drink bourbon but want to acquire for guests. My reliables that are easy to get are Bulleit 10yr. and Yellowstone 93.

I’d love to win one and pay retail. I live in a state that allows liquor stores to sell it for whatever they want and never put it out. I’ve, over the years had three bottles of the ten year old “Old Rip Van Winkle”, dropped an unopened one of them and never got a sip. I’ve had a deal in the works for a few years to trade some of my artwork for a custom pool cue, $1,000 cash and a 23 year old bottle of Pappy Van Winkle. I need to complete the piece my friend wants. BTW I’m a blacksmith and that’s my art, I make custom bottle openers for a living.

I just bought a 10 yo Bulleit for the first time this week. I like anything Elijah Craig and that’s my go to.

Actually I was vacuuming the floor and knocked it off my liquor cabinet onto a ceramic tile floor.

You can find the Pappy 23y/o on the market for around $4500 right now. That’s a bargain compared to what it was 10 years ago but still overpriced by quite a bit.

If you really want to try it then take a trip to Louisville and look around until you can find it by the glass in a bar. I spent $80 a shot and it was a damned fine drink but there is plenty of other stuff that’s also quite good for quite a bit less.

I “won” a bottle of 12 yr Pappy last year through Total (cost $100). If you drink it, you can sell the empty bottle on EBay for around that price. I’m in the lotto there again this year. Cheers!

I’ve had it before. It’s good but the pricing now is like the tulip pricing in the 1700’s. Years ago they comped it at the Baccarat bar in Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Speaking of Baccarat, their Harcourt Abysse tumbler is amazing and fitting for the serious Bourbon drinker (I bought a pair for an older friend of mine)...
