The boy's mother remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while both dogs have been euthanized, officials said
A 3-year-old boy was attacked and killed, and a mother badly injured, by two dogs in their New Jersey neighborhood, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
The attack in Carteret occurred in the backyard of a home around 4:30 p.m., according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and town police chief Dennis McFadden. First responders quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the young boy to the hospital.
The child died at the hospital. The mother, who was said to have suffered severe injuries, remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, officials said.
Neighbors described how the horrific scene played out, as the child was playing in the yard when two dogs attacked. The canines live on the opposite side of the victims' backyard, and somehow got past a fence before going after the boy and his mother.
One man said he could hear the mother's cries for help, but no one was there. Neighbors said the family had recently moved to Carteret from New York City.
No one answered the door of the home where the dogs were said to live. Those who knew the owners said the dogs never seemed aggressive before, and didn't seem to cause too much commotion.
It was unclear if the owners were facing charges. Town officials said municipal records show the dogs were not registered with Cartaret, which is required by law. The local police chief later confirmed both dogs had been euthanized.
"As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor and we pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief," Cartaret Mayor Daniel Reiman said Wednesday.

So, so sad. I’ve told the stories before. I know two people who were attacked by “sweet” pit bulls who had never done anything like that before. I know it’s not only pit bulls, but they attack more than any other breed and the injuries tend to be more severe.
Labs are a very sweet breed. Except for meth labs.
It's like a switch. It happened with a family members pit going after my 3 year old daughter many years ago. No one could believe what they saw, as the dog was so sweet, loving and loyal. Thank God I was right there. Safely outside, it repeated the behavior later when my daughter walked near the door. No taunting or even eye contact. They are great dogs, until they aren't. Very few owners can accept that until it's too late.
That is true. In the past when I looked at adopting dogs from a shelter, they were majority pit bulls or pit bull mixes.

The Dog Rescue organizations around here have mostly these type of dogs. I can’t believe that’s the only type of dogs that need rescuing.

The black one is a pit-bull-lab mix. I’ve raised both before, and the mix, too, before deciding against having any more liability dogs like pit bulls, rots, German shepherds, etc.

I’d have killed the dog and beaten the owner to within an inch of her life. The sad reality in life is that some people need the snot knocked out of them to make them understand certain things.
My S-I-L is a firefighter who went on a recovery call. A man apparently died alone, and had no friends and family to check on him. After about a week, neighbors complained of a foul odor, and police came to do a welfare check.
The man had a pet chihuahua that survived by eating the man’s eyeballs.

The owners need to be taken to civil court then because the damn state laws do not make this a real crime same with the other end when people torture and abuse animals they get slapped on the wrist. These breeds are products of the latter and now are too dangerous
so? This was man who worked at a warehouse in Brooklyn in a three room apt moved to a bigger house he could afford with his wife and three kids.
so its not that I hate dogs....I love them....
but one has to be extremely careful with all of them....when I see a huge dog sniffing a baby in a carrier on floor and the parents are just smiling, so happy...I think...geez, one frantic moment and that child is gone....

No it is not. I’ve been a professional trainer for decades and some dogs have been raised to heard livestock, others to follow a scent trail, and others to bite and fight.
It is centuries of manipulative breeding to insure certain instincts are present in the blood lines.
If you don’t believe it go to youtube and search for border collie puppies herding ducks.
The puppies have almost zero interaction with humans and have never been out of their kennels before but when put down with a flock of ducks they begin to “work and heard” the ducks in a very obvious fashion.
That is bred in instinct just as pit bulls have a bred in instinct to bite and fight.
You can enhance instinct and amplify it with training but dogs are either born with it or not. Not every border collie turns into a great working dog but they tend to work things that move, even kids. Not ever pit bull turns into a monster but the time and place that something triggers some into the bite and fight mode is very unpredictable.
I've seen similar numbers from the fbi regarding another group...just can't put my finger on it, but wonder if there is any correlation.
As the article explicitly states, the 3-year-old was playing in his own yard, which was protected by a fence, before the neighbors' dogs "somehow" managed to overcome the fence and attack the boy.
