'30 days to find a job:' Over 2 million workers face unemployment benefits cliff

More than 2 million workers could see their jobless benefits slashed or eliminated altogether next month as more states opt out of federal unemployment programs. Some of the hardest hit will be out-of-work Black Americans.
“The states are giving them 30 days to find a job,” Andrew Stettner, an unemployment insurance expert and senior fellow at the Century Foundation, told Yahoo Money. “Most of those workers won’t find a job within those 30 days. Most of them are going to have zero in unemployment benefits.”
Those workers stand to collectively lose $10.9 billion, averaging out to potentially thousands of dollars per worker, money that also won’t flow into those states’ economies, according to an analysis by the Century Foundation.
Eighteen states so far plan to cancel the pandemic-era jobless programs. Alaska and West Virginia were the latest states to opt out on Friday, a move gaining steam among Republican governors following last week's disappointing jobs report.
“More than 50 local employers have posted recruitments, and the response has been very positive. Employer demand for workers is outpacing job applicants,” Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Dr. Tamika L. Ledbetter said in a statement on Friday. “For those seeking employment, the time is now.”...

Yeah, yeah - “World Ends Tomorrow! Women and Minorities Hardest Hit!” Thirty days not to “find” but to pick a job. My heart bleeds.

One could look at it as a (personal) business decision.
100%. Not all are lazy. How many have they watched game this system year after year? Tired of handouts? Tired of working 40 or more hours while others on unemployment are buying hot tubs and buying crab legs with their freaking snap checks? Well, I say to take yours. Take it all til there’s nothing left. It’s the only way to pull through this, wake people up, and get America back to what made us great.

That would be an academic exercise. Even if such a repeal was ratified, would any state actually dare to take the next step and remove the franchise?

Hard to imagine the work attitudes of those who believe they have been deprived of their right to pay without work.

Almost every restaurant, fast food place, bog box store, etc. in my are is hiring. No excuse not to find something.
And those pay what you'd expect for places like that. So you run into two issues: low-paid people on unemployment, and high-paid people on unemployment.
Low-paid people on unemployment make more with free checks than they would working for $10 an hour (if even that high). FedGov's $300 bonus per week IS ALREADY seven-fifty, more than minimum wage.
High-paid people on unemployment aren't looking at jobs like that. To start getting UI, you only have to look at jobs within 90% of your prior pay. By the time it ends (26 weeks of UI pay), you only have to be open to accept a job that's I think 60-70% of your prior income. If you were making $75M a year, 60% of that equates to ~$20 an hour, more than double what those open positions are paying.
At least for my industry, there are no open positions. Corporate AV, and the whole events industry in general, got absolutely demolished and still hasn't fully opened back up. It'll be years before we get back to what it was - conferences and meetings and so on depend on companies being willing to host and attend those events, not just Gov't getting its big stop sign out of the way. On top of companies realizing they can save a lot of $$$ by just doing meetings on Chinese video applications like Zoom, their people just aren't pissed enough at losing their end-of-year awards dinner extravaganza.

Oh, I know!
Lets end these jobless ‘benefit’ payouts for those who refuse to take the jab.
By gosh, that settles it.
(How long until the two are tied, together?)

Where I live, page after page of help wanted ads run in the local papers week after week. And these jobs are offering good wages with benefits...week after week. No one wants to work.

Same in my industry (we are in the same industry). Events Production. No conferences or events mean no jobs. Yeah extremely low-end entry-level jobs have came back. Not anything considered skilled. Small businesses who did the fair/carnival circuit are in the same boat. Travel and tourism, likewise.
Yeah we are “moochers” for not wanting to take the part-time menial blue-collar labor jobs that are offered.
$2.13 an hour plus tips or $7.25 a hour. Even $15/ hr at 24 hours a week doesn’t cut it. No one gets full-time at these jobs.
Nope. Why don’t a certain stalker take one of these “great jobs” and try living on it before passing judgement on others?

I don't know how the unemployment commission works anymore but when I worked in HR for my company, laid off workers were monitored on their unemployment payments which we recorded on their files. If an employee received a payment after being recalled to work, we would protest it to the Unemployment Commission.
Likewise if an employee was recalled to work and he never returned, we would protest those checks he received following the recall citing that work was available.
Apparently there are no checks and balances anymore......
