I’m afraid there’s no way back for John Cena, the ex-pro-wrestler and action-movie star who had to grovel before the People’s Republic of China Tuesday. While visiting Taiwan, Cena had done an appearance on the Taiwanese commercial broadcasting network TVBS, and he had boasted in Mandarin — perhaps following a poorly written script? — that Taiwan would be the “first country” to get to see F9, the newest installment of the Fast & Furious car-racing film epic.
This ticked off millions of people instantly, and he had to make a short online video apologizing, again in Mandarin, for his slipup.
Cena appeared glum, almost heartbroken as he chattered away about how sorry he was. “I love and respect China and the Chinese people,” he said. “I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I sincerely apologize. You must understand that I really love and respect China and the Chinese people. I’m sorry.” His Mandarin is said to have been pretty good, and supposedly Cena began studying the language before there was any thought of him being a second-tier Hollywood action hero.
Cena had defied the PRC’s great territorial taboo, referring to a part of greater China as an independent country. The mainlanders are particularly fussy about Taiwan, which was colonized by nationalist refugees from the mainland after the 1949 communist victory in the civil war. Taiwan, of course, is now what we would refer to in English, uncontroversially, as an independent country with its own government. But until recently the two countries had established a diplomatic balance based on the fiction that they are each the legitimate rulers of all of China.

I don't remember what year it was however I was at a WWE Event at the "Sears Center" (Formerly Allstate Arena, formerly Rosemont Horizon) near O'Hare Airport the night after Wrestlemania.
The very second John Cena started walking down the ramp to the ring the crowd cheered loudly and in unison "CENA SUCKS!" repeatedly and didn't stop until he put the mic down in the ring, walked back up the ramp and behind the curtain.
Mr. "Five Moves of Doom" is HATED by Pro Wrestling fans.

Not too much pirating anymore. Hollywood and China film studios (chinese gov’t) are co producing majority of Hollywood films today and most that appear on screen in china.
They only pirate 100% Hollywood gringo films they cannot make a profit from.

F9 is exactly the sort of generic, apolitical, mindless pap that Hollywood produces for China, and which China accepts into their market - under strict rules.
This movie will likely have huge sales, much of it coming from China - so I am surprised Cena got away with merely a groveling apology.
Let the Chinese go see Fast and Furious #997. I will skip it, and most Americans should too.
