A diner at a north Florida restaurant gathered the staff of 10 together to thank them for their hard work before leaving them a $10,000 tip to share.
It happened last Tuesday night as the man, his wife and son finished their dinner at the Wahoo Seafood Grill, the Gainesville Sun reported.
Shawn Shepherd, who owns Wahoo, told the newspaper he got a call from his employees that night, alerting him to the big tip. His first thought was to be suspicious.
“Check his ID and the name on the back of his credit card,” Shepherd advised the employee who called.
But the restaurant's point-of-sale system approved the transaction. Shepherd said he checked back the next day to make sure the money was still there.
“Watching these guys get their check was almost as good as Christmas morning,” Shepherd told the Sun.
He said he's very thankful to the diner because his employees have been loyal to the restaurant through the pandemic.
Among those benefitting from the big tip was Ashley Green, who was called into work that day. She had recently endured a rough time because her daughter was ill.
“She’s had a hard month, she’s been not able to work. Kid has been in and out of the hospital. It’s been absolutely a really stressful time for her,” Shepherd said.
When the coronavirus pandemic began, Shepherd said he temporarily closed the Wahoo and lost some $30,000 in food.

How much does Big Brother take from tips?

It’s included as your pay.
However, if you tip in cash and not via a bank or credit card, the waitress/waiter or server staff can Hide that income better.
I alway try to tip in cash.
10% for Joe.
I too always tip in cash and I always put it in the waiter’s hand so that some half hearted table cleaner can’t palm it up.

Sounds like you were in the customer service business too. :) I was a waitress, first at IHop, then at a Mexican restaurant in Champaign-Urbana, where I was going to college.
I got promoted to Friday nights; the combination of TGIF and alcohol led to some generous tips; I shared with the busboys but first I took a little, sometimes, for myself. No income to declare; it was hard work, but it was great. :)
I tend to tip very generously as well. Dealing with the public, especially a rowdy public, is hard enough; top that with balancing all kinds of plates and drinks on the tray, and walking around on your feet, well, it’s hard work.
Not sure I could do it again at my age (58).
Can I just hope that it was not on an (un)American Express Card? Reference to their recent training that featured un-American values!
As for the Restaurant & Staff, bet that will kick-up patronage with this publicity!
An addendum, since when is Gainesville “North Florida”? Then again this is ABC/Disney!
I pray Ashley Green gets the help she needs.
Let's step up.
+1

Did you share with the cooks?
Yes, of course I shared with the cooks. They are the people who make it all happen!
I had just forgotten to mention them in my previous post. :)
If you divided the state into four segments north to south (not including the Keys), it looks to me like Gainesville would be in the northernmost slice close to the border of the next slice.
I feel your pain…….I’m 58 also.
No I was never in the restaurant industry.
I know cash is untraceable regarding taxes.
I like to take care of people providing for me.

You sound like a good man, David! I am sure they appreciate it...and will reward you with the best service they can, the next time they see you.
Wait staff remember good customers and thank them with extra attention. :)

It’s incredible, isn’t it? Next October I’ll turn 59. 59!!! I can hardly believe it.
When I was 15, I asked my father if he was scared about getting older. He laughed and said, “It’s better than the alternative.” :)
He was a lawyer; I became a lawyer too. I miss him every day. I would love to ask his opinion on recent political events, though near the end, he pretty much focused on sports. March Madness, the Blackhawks, the Bulls, the Bears, the Cubs and the White Sox. On Saturdays, we went up to Northwestern, our alma mater, to watch football. On Sunday, it was the NFL on t.v..
My sister and I accompanied him and his friend to many games.
Fond memories. :)
I conceed your point but only if you are going by equal latitudes. Culturally (to me) Gainesville, home of UF and the Gators, is middle Florida, being obviously in peninsular Florida. I know few of my fellow Floridians who divvy Florida in vertical quarters. Most go with North, Mid and South. Just my 2¢s worth!

A damned great American!
Who cares HOW he did it? You go tip someone 10K, you can do it YOUR way.
You misspelled ‘penisular’. By the way, are you familiar with the state motto? Florida - because America needs a penis”
