A major maritime industry association on Monday backed plans for a global surcharge on carbon emissions from shipping to help fund the sector’s shift toward climate-friendly fuels.

The International Chamber of Shipping said it’s proposing to the United Nations that all vessels trading globally above a certain size should pay a set amount per metric ton of carbon dioxide they emit.

Environmental groups welcomed the proposal to the the International Maritime Organization, a U.N. body, but cautioned that it doesn’t specify what carbon price would be supported by the group, which represents commercial shipowners and operators covering over 80% of the world merchant fleet.

“We will know they are serious about real progress when they embrace a level of ambition consistent with what climate vulnerable island nations have already proposed,” said Aoife O’Leary, director of global transportation at the Environmental Defense Fund. …

The shipping outfits will cheerfully pass the extra expense to the downstream, downtrodden consumers.

These groups are leeches. They Have absolutely nothing to do with the industry

They just want to tax everybody and steal their money

Carbon dioxide which we all breathe out which is absolutely essential to life on planet earth was the biggest boondoggle they ever came up with

Bingo. A big red herring meant only for taxation and control, nothing more. A gigantic lie that never ends...

The cost for shipping containers skyrocketed recently. An additional cost will make foreign goods even more expensive. Clueless Joe will fight any attempt to make the US more economically independent.

The ocean is so vast as to be incomprehensible for the ordinary person. "Emissions" from ships is infinitesimal compared to the mass of the oceans and atmosphere. This is blackmail payments to the Global Elites.

Needless to say, there is no global warming.

Every couple of years some new fad is promulgated to ensnare the public: save the spotted owls, save the snail darter, save the baby seals, nuclear power is bad, global warming, global freezing, electric cars, etc. etc. Now we have emissions from ships. Yet another leftist globalist scam.

This has nothing to do with carbon. It’s an international tax. Who enforces this tax? And which grifter gets the loot.

Exactly, with an extra 10-20% tacked on for the “additional administrative costs” added on.

The unspoken discussion in the board rooms:

“We know we can’t win this fight, so let’s appear to capitulate and get watered down regulations we can live with rather than fight to the end and get really onerous regulations. Besides, we can pass these costs on to our customers.”

I lived through this same behavior in the electric power industry.

Interesting. Just a week ago, our logistics lady had a conversation about the outrageous container charges of late and rumors from her overseas contacts that the Chinese already are mooting plans to take over the world's seagoing shipping business.

Xi make ships run on time! Like Mussolini and train!

The International Chamber of Shipping said it’s proposing to the United Nations that all vessels trading globally above a certain size should pay a set amount per metric ton of carbon dioxide they emit ... because they want to collect the kickbacks and taxes in this utopia wealth redistribution scheme
