Rabbi Asks: What happened to good sportsmanship at World Series?
11/4/2021 | Rabbi Yossi New

Posted on 11/04/2021 8:24:40 AM PDT by Babwa

The World Series and Sportsmanship.

My family has lived in Atlanta since 1984. As an Australian who grew up playing and following cricket, baseball was not on my radar until 1991 when the Braves soared from worst to first. Since then, I have been a fan.

As the Braves clinched the series, becoming world champions for the first time in 26 years, my family and I cheered enthusiastically. But as I watched the post game celebrations and interviews, an uneasy feeling struck me. There were no on-field interactions between the Braves and Astro players. No handshakes. No congratulations. No Commiserations.

Not one member of the Braves, from owners to managers to players, even mentioned the Astros. The losing team was just mercilessly left to lick their wounds on their own.

What happened to good sportsmanship? Especially in the World Series.

Shouldn’t there be an official protocol at the end of a game for both sides to greet each other? An instructive demonstration of grace and empathy, that the “war” is now over and that former “enemies” are now peacefully coexisting. What a wonderful teaching moment that would be for all of us, especially for our youth, to see that when the competition is over former opponents can be friendly and supportive.

Baseball is filled with so many unique traditions. This one may need to be reevaluated.

Someone with the authority, please do something to upgrade the human decency dimension of Americas favorite pastime.

Rabbi Yossi New, Director of Chabad of Georgia, Atlanta, GA

Probably due to covid protocols. They are not allowed to shake hands.

I gave it up back in ‘94 when the players went on strike and the fans were forgotten.

When the strike was over, everyone said they loved the fans and to come back.

I swore never again and have been true to my word.

Red Sox and Yankees will often embrace to congratulate each other.

Hockey is the only one with that tradition. The other sports are basically random, maybe the teams talk after, maybe not.

“MLB, as far as I can tell, has never had team handshakes after a game or a series.”

From what I’ve seen there are handshakes between members of the same team but not between teams.

In the NFL, some of the players from both teams will pray in the middle of the field after the game.

Did baseball ever do such a thing? I don’t think its ever been a tradition.

In hockey they have a handshake line after every playoff series. The players shake hands, and even chat, after cursing and fighting each other just hours before.

I was an early MLB.com subscriber and long time Braves fan, but I walked away when MLB handed out wrist-slap punishments to the Astros. Going woke certainly eased my exit.

Most of the active roster and all of management should have been banned from the game.

I’m old enough to remember when young boys looked up to their favorite sport stars. I’m so thoroughly disgusted at how the Left has corrupted everything it touches.

This guy sounds like a simpering loser.

This is something that has never been done as a custom in MLB. If the guy wants to see a post-game handshake, he should watch the Stanley Cup playoffs or an international hockey tournament.

Sorry Rabbi, but good sportsmanship in baseball ended when the stupid commissioner decided to wage war for one side in a political battle.

He would need to be ridden out of town on a rail for the healing to start.

Hockey still has the players line up for the handshakes at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs and finals.

Well hockey is an actual sport played by the civilized.

Baseball is a game for children.

Astros broke any semblance of good sportsmanship when they went woke in first game.

Should have lost in four, not six.

Bite me, Rabbi. I’m tired of turning the other cheek after 5+ years of hate, and will not listen to the likes of you telling me otherwise.

What about at the start of the series, before the winner was known, when Dusty Baker and Brian Snitker hugged before game 1?

Baker did the same thing at the first Atlanta home game during the tribute to Hank Aaron when he crossed the field to hug Aaron's son.

The two are baseball lifers from their earliest days with the Braves.

Sorry, this just seems like one gripe too many. Are we looking for things to pontificate about? I saw the players interacting constantly at different bases throughout the series. Enjoy the victory for goodness sake.
