Herod was a client king for the Romans, but was put in power initially by Mark Antony, whom he supported during the showdown between Antony and Octavian, but Octavian/Augustus allowed him to keep the throne.

After Herod killed his own son, Augustus commented it was better to be Herod's pig than his son.
