The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash on Highway 1 Monday that ended with a driver falling into the ocean.

According to investigators, big wave surfer Darryl "Flea" Virostko was driving on Highway 1 when he was struck by another car driven by a 40-year-old Santa Cruz woman.

The unidentified woman reportedly got out of her vehicle, crossed the highway and walked toward the cliff overlooking the ocean before she fell into the ocean. Investigators don't know it was an accident or not.

The woman's body was recovered from the ocean by Coast Guard helicopter.

> Beautiful scenery but treacherous driving conditions.

High penalty for failure to concentrate.

PCH is superior to that Cabrillo Highway junk.

Surenos > Nortenos.

Not debating that at all. I think PCH is a cooler name for Highway 1 too.

Wow, Flea is a very famous surfer and I’ve seen him in lots of documentaries. In fact I’m surprised he’s still surfing; he must be long in the tooth by now. . .

That’s like these farm roads down here in Texas and driving at night for me in my old age - concentrate! I always tell myself “only thing on these roads at this hour is dogs, kids, deers, steers and queers

Did they misidentify the spot? The video doesn’t look like a cliff area. That spot does look familiar, but I can’t place it exactly.

Flea’s hoping that there is none of her DNA on him.

I can’t imagine anything that might top it.

Red Mountain pass out of Ouray, Colorado. Drops down into the mountain mining town of Silverton, then back up over Molas Pass and down into Durango. Gorgeous drive. Must do it on a motorcycle some day. The "Million Dollar Highway".

True but it’d be like calling the 101 “Ventura Freeway” up here without getting a lot of confused looks.

That’s what I always heard. “The 1. The 5. The 10. The 880. The 101.”

I lived in Marshall, CA on Highway 1. I never heard Cabrillo Highway.
Now I live just off US1 in Florida!

North of SLO, Highway 1. South of SLO, PCH. Not sure what the Oregonians call Highway 1.

I never hear anyone call it Cabrillo Highway, but their are signs that say that. Do you like oysters?

“40-year-old Santa Cruz woman.”

Expected. Cats can only supply so much companionship.

I happened to think maybe that was not the accident area, but just the only staging area the helicopter could land.
