Auto Mechanical Issues

Dodge Charger, 2015. A clacking noise started in the front end passenger side tire area. Sounded much like a card kids would put in bicycle spokes. It went away with fast acceleration. It would return when I slowed down to make a stop. As I took off again, the clacking would return. It will clack according to speed when it's going slowly. It will not make the noise while moving in reverse.

Today, it did the same as the above except that on my way home it had a rub in the same area which was very noticeable. You could feel it inside the car as a drag. Did it twice.

Had brake calipers replaced last fall. No other issues with car ever. 50,000+ mileage.

Any ideas?

If your radio is working, turn it up, louder.

Good luck. I hate car problems.

Possibly a CV joint.

Get you tires balanced for free where you bought your tires and present the problem to them.

Could be a wheel bearing. Not too expensive to repair.
Ball bearings should be round not square. Don’t wait too long to have it checked.

Why would anyone need new brake calipers at <50,000 miles?

Answer: Dodge.

Take it back where the work was done. It needs doing again.

And stop riding your brakes!

Check the backing plate behind the disc brake. It’s possible something hit it and it bent, but not sure why you don’t hear it in reverse. A CV joint is noisier when turning if it’s going out (turn the opposite direction from the clicking tire and see if it gets louder. If you can Jack it up and get that tire off the ground, you can try to wiggle the tire to check for bearing or bushing issues. If it will wobble side to side, probably a bearing. Up and down is suspension bushings, but that won’t cause a clicking.

Agree with possible wheel bearing. Jack the wheel off the ground, try to move it up and down, and front and back. If you feel looseness, then a bad bearing.

If it is a hub/wheel bearing, they run from $50ish up to $90. I’d always get a quality one over a chinesium one if possible. Usually a hub losing a bearing will make more noise when you turn one way.

Looks like this if all wheel drive:

Or like this if rear wheel drive:

Boy, bunch a comedians on this thread huh?

You have capability to jack up the offending corner and pull the wheel off.

If so a cursory visual inspection might reveal the issue.

Anyway, do the simple stuff first and avoid taking it to a dealership at ALL cost!

Suspect something up with the brake job. I’ve seen screwdrivers left in calipers.

I agree with others. Probably or CV joint or something else in the suspension.

From your description, you should probably have it fixed by a pro soon or it might leave you stranded or worse, cause an unsafe condition.

A friend of mine had a suspension problem about 8 months ago and I told him I thought it was probably a CV joint. Turns out it was something else in the suspension and cost him about $1,800 to have it fixed.

Have it looked at and go from there.

As someone who makes a living at this, park that car immediately and have someone who does know what to look for come JACK IT UP and diagnose it before you drive it anymore. What you described can be a very serious issue that could cause an accident at any time. No joke...

By your description my first suspicions would be loose wheel lugnuts. If so the wheel could fall off at any moment while driving it. This needs an immediate inspection before you operate it anymore.

Yep!
Problem with buying/driving a Dutch automobile is that those dang Dutch wheels begin to make a clacking sound with those darned wooden shoes if they fit too loosely...

Check the motor mounts on the side that’s making the noise.

I’m from the stupid school of mechanics. Try mounting the spare and see if the noise goes away
