For better and worse, “Turning Red” is like no Pixar film before it.
The film, directed by Domee Shi, who made the lovely Oscar-winning short “Bao,” is the first Pixar movie directly solely by a woman. Its leadership team, including producers and art departments, is entirely female. And its protagonist, 13-year-old Meilin Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), is a Chinese-Canadian eighth-grader in the throws of puberty.
For Pixar, a factory of childhood whimsy designed to make adults cry, “Turning Red” fills in more than a few blind spots. Not only is the movie deeply rooted in a female and Asian-North American perspective, it wades into a chapter of life unfrequented by Pixar. This is the first film by the studio in which, for example, a sanitary pad is offered. And it’s the first — history take note — to feature twerking.
But “Turning Red” is surprisingly free of humor or the kind of visual wit that has long been a Pixar hallmark. It could be that, if we’re talking about representing hard-to-tame adolescent urges in monster form, “Turning Red” — bold as it may be — can’t come close to matching the messy comic farce of “Big Mouth,” the far less family-friendly but much more true-to-life animated series that paired seventh graders with lascivious “hormone monsters.” It isn’t easy — or maybe even possible — to do puberty justice with a PG rating.
“Turning Red,” a Walt Disney Co. release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for thematic material, suggestive content and language. Running time: 100 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Appropriate title for commie chinese appeasing filmers
I take it that is NOT referring from turning liberal blue to patriotic deplorable red.
They are normalizing what were supposedly going after Epstein's clients over.
Wow, puberty as some novel thing. Last I checked, we all went through it.
Now if it was about a Canadian-Indian girl with a bad habit of inappropriate cackling, and only being two-dimensional, it could be the biopic of our current Veep.
It was something we were supposed to go through??
How did red come to be the hue for conservstive orientated states in the U.S and blue for statists?
When I think of blue I think of the sky and free as a bird. Red evokes anger, violence, war and communism
I see a marketing opportunity for Disney!
Sounds like another one I can miss.
“About an eighth grader ‘in the throws’ of puberty.”
This film is going to have limited appeal once the word gets out. There may be a Novelty component to it, where a film is so peculiar and unappealing, that people assume that equals a
“profound” work.
**The first film to feature a Sanitary Napkin being given out!
Is this what the world has been waiting for or what?
So, it is a remake of ‘Carrie”? Lot of “Red” in that one lol
Little boys who don’t know any better are going to be asking for those when they see their big sister get one.
“No Johnny, these are not for you! I know it seems unfair. No. I’m not mad at you.
Grandma will explain when we get home after the movie.”
As opposed to "throes", I guess.
Poor Jake - writes for AP, and stupid, to boot.
One would think a professional writer would know the difference between throws and throes
The problem is while you can write a book for a niche audience doing a movie is a lot harder.
Who is this movie aimed at?
Who can relate to it?
Basically it is aimed at girls around the age of 11-14.
Not big spenders or movie goers.
And while things like "Toy Story" tap into adult nostalgia for our childhood NO ONE wants to relive puberty even vicariously.
Article written by an illiterate. Malaprop much?
e.g. “throws (sic) of puberty”
“Throws” of puberty.
WTH is that? Where the heck are the editors?
Throes.
I just assumed this was a straight translation done by a software system, or as you say, it could be poor editing.
I have long since stopped correcting people who use
“to” when they mean “too”. Sometimes I make that mistake too.
Worse is making a statement and ending that sentence with a question mark vs a period,
i.e. “I didn’t like that movie?”
