Back in 1968, some 54 years ago, my girlfriend and I attended an Aretha Franklin performance at Red Rocks amphitheater just west of Denver. A beautiful outdoor setting in the foothills of the Rockies on a gorgeous August evening.
Apparently she had a dispute with the promoter and refused to perform. The tickets were not inexpensive, and there were many Blacks in the audience. A small riot ensued, with local law enforcement called in to quell the disturbance. Problem being they were thwarted with all the traffic exiting the venue. Bottom line ticket refunds were never offered ... and Aretha Franklin, in my opinion is a grifter.

Aretha Franklin always wanted half of her pay up front because she had lost money by shady promoters in the past. If they didn't produce the money she wouldn't go on stage even if she was at the venue. It was in her contracts until she quit touring.
