Oh, the HORROR!
Steely Dan music sounds as fresh today as it did 45 years ago. Lots of folks today are just discovering them for the first time.
Even Johnny Rotten likes ABBA.
Steely Dan’s lyrics actually are pretty punk. Lot of downtrodden outsiders in those songs.
<< I like Steely Dan. Is that bad?” >>
Not as bad as liking Kenny G. or Yanni or the Dave Matthews band.
He probably can’t remember recording “Never Mind the Bollocks” or being on stage since he was boozed and coked up most of the time in those days. He is right about Steely Dan. I think Jones is now a DJ in LA. I saw an interview he did with Steve Perry of Journey and Jones admitted he was a big fan of both Journey and Boston!
“I like Steely Dan. Is that bad?””
Yes.
Me neither, in fact now that I think of it I never did.
This is quite normal. I would prefer listening to Steely Dan as well. I did like the Sex Pistols when I was in high school. Now they just give me a headache.
That music is both angry and energetic, and a 66 year old man should be long past anger, and mostly out of energy.
I'd think if he still liked punk, there would be something wrong with him!

You know he has listened to Pink Floyd all these years too!
I’ve noticed that a lot of musicians hate listening to their earlier music. For one thing, they’re probably sick of it from playing it over and over, night after night for years. Then, like most of us (I hope) they’ve matured over the course of several decades and see their youthful selves and music as relatively immature compared to the people and artists they are today. I remember John Lennon saying as early as 1968, he couldn’t stand hearing his own music even from just 3 or 4 years before.
The movie clips look retarded...rock bios rarely work cause it’s like “wait WHICH ONE IS HE AGAIN” Must be a bitch trying to find lookalikes
Steely Dan went downhill after Pretzel Logic.
Steely Dan was musically superior in every way.
Musical tastes change. Current music is so bad I’ve been mining for songs and bands that fell through the cracks for me. Right now I love some Primus and also the guitar GOAT, Buckethead. And I am old.
Steely Dan was the anti-punk band. They were all about high production quality and great sound. They still had some sneakily subversive and cynical lyrics.
The British version of Steely Dan was Supertramp. Well, sort of.
