A very entertaining book with lots of great photos of cats serving on ships - some cats even had uniforms and tiny hammocks like the other sailors. The book is also packed full of surprising facts about cats and their role on ships, which was much more than just chasing rodents.

That video story about the kitty named “Mis Hap” is hilarious! What a great story. Thanks for posting.

While archeologists claim dog was the first animal domesticated by man, I believe it was because dogs were useful both as a beast of burden and as a food source.
Cats, OTOH, were domesticated many years later when man moved from hunter/gatherer to agriculture. They charmed their way into our hearts by catching rodents who fed off the grain we stored.

Reminds me of my loyal companion “Fenwick the Cat” that kept the rats off of me while in a Vietnam base camp. At night I could feel his paws scratching back and forth on my poncho liner waiting for the right moment to make the kill. He was an excellent rat catcher until I made a huge mistake and fed him some rehydrated shrimp.
