Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Is Officially Changing Its Name

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Is Officially Changing Its Name The logo, packaging, and other details are also getting an update.

Spelling people's names, you gotta be careful: Mark Wahlberg is different than Mark Walberg. (Which you prefer is up to you.) But with brands, you have a bit more leeway. If I were to write out In 'N' Out instead of their preferred In-N-Out, you'd likely still know I'm talking about the Southern Californian burger chain. But I prefer to go with a brand's preferred spelling. If Dunkin' wants to drop their Donuts or Jamba wants to ax their Juice, we might as well respect that instead of being hardheadedly archaic.

Sometimes, though, a brand's preferred name is genuinely confusing… and, for me at least, Kraft Mac & Cheese has always been one of those brands. The box states Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Dinner, but Kraft would often write the whole spelling out: Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Meanwhile, most people just call it Kraft Mac 'n' Cheese (or if you're Canadian, Kraft Dinner).

Now, Kraft is answering the question of how Americans (at least) should address this pasta product, officially slimming it down to the shorthand. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese's "new" name is officially "Kraft Mac & Cheese." And the grocery store staple is getting a logo and packaging update to boot.

Victoria Lee, brand manager for Kraft Mac & Cheese, stated that there is a "comfort to Kraft Mac & Cheese that makes it so special and iconic to millions of people across the world" — with Kraft touting they sell over a million boxes every day — "and our new look is a reflection of what our brand means to our consumers."

The update to the 85-year-old product includes a new name, logo, brand colors, typography, photography, and packaging — though the overall feel of the box is still the same with a blue background (though now with single hue), a rounded font, and an orange macaroni "smile" below the name (which now features a small — maybe a little bit gross — drip of cheese). As for the name, Kraft states that it "is meant to reflect the way fans organically talk about the brand."

Kraft says the new look will arrive online this summer and the packaging will start rolling out in August. So all you hardheadedly archaic types, start stocking up now.

The odd thing about the name change is that I always considered the “macaroni” as the real part while the powdered “cheese” substance was fake. Maybe rename it as “Macaroni and Chz”.

Reminds me of when I was just starting out and had little money. I'd get these at the supermarket "five boxes for a dollar". Along with generic raisin bran, cans of chicken noodle soup and boxes of Minute rice. If it was cheap I'd buy it in bulk.

Not the healthiest diet but I was in my 20s and my body was able to process it without any long term health effects.

I always suspect that this sort of thing is the product of staff bloat. You have brand managers and “creatives” in the marketing division who think they have to recommend changes to validate the importance of their jobs. They end up driving changes for the sake of changes. A better manager would say, “If we have people wasting their time on this, let’s eliminate the phony-baloney jobs.”

This happens a lot with consultant as well. It’s hard for a high-priced consultant to accept a big check and then report back that everything is fine. If managers had more backbone, a lot of people at places like McKinsey would probably have to find more productive employment managing a 7-Eleven.

We'd just eat more of it.

Okay, so where did this come from? Does Kraft own macaroni and Velveeta had to go with shells? Then who owns fusilli? Sounds like a business opportunity.

I do a similar version, only I use milk (or, half and half), instead of water.

Easy peasy making your own. Diced tomatoes, Italian sausage or Earl Campbell’s and peas. Pepper and Tony Cacheres.

Try using bacon grease instead of the recommended butter or margarine.

Meanwhile, executives met last week bemoaning the timing of the SCOTUS ruling on RvW, having pushed news of the name change to the nether regions of the ether.

One man at the table: “I told you so.”

Whether that one man is the next CEO or the manager of a Starbucks depends solely on which way the wind blows in that city.
