Lake Forest is too close, according to some commentators. Just north of Highland Park, if the maps are correct.
In the 1970s, general advice from survivalist thinkers (predecessors of prepping thinkers) suggested moving 250-300 statue miles away from any major urban area - the distance an average automobile of the time could travel on half a tank of gas.
“White-yellow-red” threat condition spectrum has been advocated by many dispensers of street-smart advice. Best recollection: the late Jeff Cooper recommended it.
