As Johnny Carson (the MC for the Oscars award show which was being held the day after Reagan's assassination attempt) shares the news that President Reagan is doing well and recovering fast after the assassination attempt, the audience erupts in applause, showing their goodwill towards President Reagan.
yep, somehow I doubt we would see such a reaction today, from Hollywood idiots, if a Republican president had survived.
You’re exactly right.
Probably the last president to win New York, Texas, California, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Idaho, Vermont, Alabama, Massachusetts, and so on down the line, 49 states.
I think we should remind people of that more often when Reagan is mentioned in a negative way as being too conservative or dividing, or whatever the modern media generated history.
Texas? Oklahoma? Alabama?
In its “rankings” of the Presidents, CBS puts Reagan at No. 18, one ahead of Joe Biden! And they mention one of his few positives as “luck”, which is bs. Nothing about the resuscitation of a dead economy and the associated high inflation of the Carter years; zilch about putting an end to the Soviet/US cold war; nothing about restoring national self-confidence. This is the same CBS which came out with a purported “poll” today which shows the Dems rising and within striking distance of taking the House - even Nate Silver of 538 and the NY Times don’t see this.
All states, of all kinds, blue, red, purple.
What an accomplishment for a right winger the media called Ronnie Raygun.
In reality, what a unifier Reagan was as he brought the people together.
Ronald Reagan had considerable affection from Hollywood’s actors because he was a successful Screen Actor’s Guild President who had won the concession of residual rights from Hollywood’s notoriously tight-fisted producers. I recall a gossip reporter describing an unnamed faded screen and TV idol who was a queer and a leftist Democrat who explained his unexpected great regard for Reagan by showing off a fat residual check.
Hollywood had not been infected by the left yet.
Yep. In 1981, Hollywood was still plenty filled with holdovers from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
And America still had a moral core.
I remember hearing a story of a woman, a teacher, who lost her lob because she said something approving of the assassination attempt.
Forty years later her kind of crude leftwing ideology has taken over not only the entire education establishment but the news media, Hollywood, federal law enforcement, every public bureaucracy, and half the population.
Reagan lost minnesota by fewer than 3800 votes. Almost a clean sweep!
Yep, it sure refutes so many style attacks on Reagan and GOP presidents and such, I’m surprised we don’t use it more often.
Prior to CRT and DIE and wokeness.
In 1985 about 78% white, but Reagan did pretty well relatively speaking with blacks and hispanics.
Censu Bureau estimates. https://www2.census.gov/library/publications/1987/demographics/p23-150.pdf
“would not grow proportionately as fast
as the previous groups based on the
middle series. In 1985. White non
Hispanics numbered 187 million. 78
percent of the total U.S. population.”
In 1946, then New Deal Democrat Ronald Reagan clashed with the communists who had secretly won control of the politically-minded Independent Citizens Committee of the Arts, Sciences and Professions. Reagan then attended a private meeting with a handful of actors and production people of similar views and experience in opposing communist influence in the group.
At that meeting, Reagan and old friend Olivia de Haviland humorously exchanged lines to the effect that "But I thought YOU were one of them!" (Communists). If Hollywood were a better place, we would have quite a movie about the professional and personal courage of such anticommunists, many of whom were prominent actors and producers.
Reagan did not campaign in Minnesota as a courtesy to his Democratic opponent who was from Minnesota. Had he won Minnesota he would have been the only President since Washington to win every state.
