Not only do subtitles help me understand, I have noticed that most of the time, when I do not clearly hear the words, the subtitle print out stalls or posts gibberish.

That is actually encouraging to me, that the computer cannot understand it any better than I can.

I also keep my TV volume low, lest I disturb my neighbors.

I've taken to using bluetooth earphones so I can actually hear my TV clearly. The sound coming across the room is vastly different than getting put right into your ear.

I don't watch much TV, just like to hear it when I do. (Typically things like Mark Levin, Greg Kelly for example.)

I have had the exact same experience with subtitles. I used to think it was a liberal plot.🤬
