Don’t be too handy. Friends and family find out you’re retired and have skills tend to find you work.

My youngest bought a salvage 2014 Expedition and had it delivered to my place for me to straighten the frame and unbody, replace all damaged parts, replace timing chains and sprockets. Got it done, (I don’t do paint), and he sold it 6 months later. This week its yank the airmatic struts from his 2015 Mercedes gl450, and install coil-over struts (that rig has been a maintenence pig).

I should sell all my tools, welders, acetylene torch, etc and tell everyone I’m on strike permanently. The ‘retirement’ pay is horrible.

Have fun, sir!

We became empty nesters 9 years ago when we moved the nest, and the last one fledged! I canโ€™t tell you what a blessing it is to watch your children grow up, and begin to handle their lives in earnest, while you watch, and guide only when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, hands off, and enjoy your empty nest! We have grown so much closer in these nine years. Same age as you but not ready to retire (thanks Burden!), but will be at it a few more years just to make sure we are really ready when the time comes. We wish you all the best, and do hope that you will return after a sabbatical.

Good Luck! Try turning your phone off as well. Perhaps for a few hours a day. Also, do you really need as much TV (if you do view it). My wife and I have been retired for some time and we are down to watching movies on DVD, which we own or rent from Netflix. No network shows or anything that can have politics sneak in. I understand walking away from FR for a while. It is my last indulgence in politics. I should stay away for most of the time and perhaps review for an hour or two a day just to catch up. Again, peace and tranquility to you and your wife. May you truly learn to appreciate the time that the Lord has given you.

I took a break after a personal tragedy last year. Sometimes it’s needed and I pray this break brings you what you need!

Regards!

Yep. Likewise when I finally get my finances in order to leave this country, I’ll announce it to nobody. When my Mom dies, I will have no family, and nobody left in this country to miss me. And I won’t miss what this country is becoming. Just silently and anonymously disappear into the crowds of a foreign country, and try to find something redeeming in my final years, with nothing left to care about, and nobody left to care about me.

Good luck in your break. Hope you find peace.

I've been an empty nester since 2015. I just signed up for my next year of employee benefits. I'm 66 with no debts. The reason I'm back in the barrel for another year is that I don't trust the direction of the government or economy. I'm going to maximize my income options until my employer can't pay me anymore. My full social security date is 31 Dec 2022. I had given consideration to retirement this year. Had Trump won in 2020, I might have pursued retirement. I need to prep harder ahead of a "force majeure" retirement.

“I suggest you are overthinking retirement.”

Couldn’t agree more. A lot of people agonize about “what am I going to do after I retire”.

You don’t know what’s going to grab your attention and interest once your time is yours.

Just do “nothing” for a while and something will come along and will grab your interest.

Most of all don’t think of it as “retirement” like you’re done with living. Think of it as a new start with you in control of your time and what to do with it.

Enjoy it - it’ll be the best time of your life.

Don’t blame you. It’s getting really depressing reading the news, even in our FR safe space.

I read it in the morning and puts me in a sour mood the whole day.

Christians may never retire from doing the things expected of Christians.

Enjoy the break. Iโ€™ve done it and found it beneficial.

I wish you and your SO all the best and I hope youโ€™ll be back.

God bless.
