I guess it’s still OK to assign gender to an animal. And why nit? Most of them get their gonads removed.

A friend has a French Bulldog, and he wanted to give him a French Name. He lives in South Carolina, so wanted something southern in the name too. He said the dog’s face is all smushed up like a tater-tot. So:

Napoleon ‘Tater

I thought that’s pretty good.

I have had feline overlords all my life.

They pick their names.

I would also add “Archie” for male dogs - there are at least three dogs in my neighborhood with that name and one I encounter on my dog walk.

Milo is another overused dog name. Luna and Bella are everywhere for girl dogs.

Neighbor just got a new puppy and the daughter wanted to him him “Archie” - I advised against it, it’s become common in our area.

They settled on “Theo” instead.

After my dad died, my mom got a Pekingese to keep her company. His name was Ewok, named by me, because that's what he looked like as a puppy.

Most of the names for dogs conform to my rule for naming a dog: starts with a consonant, two syllables.

We used to use Rover...it’s a decent service. We found a lady that we loved and used her consistently. A lot of Rover sitters ARE NOT reasonably priced, but this lady was. Still, with two dogs, boarding was quite expensive. We eventually decided to look for “pet friendly” hotels and put the “sitter” money towards stays in those, if there was an upcharge.

As far as animal names...

We just let the animals decide their own names...just like we let them decide their own sex.

My dogs don’t care what I call them, as long as I call them for dinner.

I don’t think there are “girl and boy” dogs and cats. There are male and female...

Using those terms just seems “grammar school”ish.

You’ve never praised a dog by saying ‘Good boy’ or ‘Good girl’?

I insist that a fog actually know its name, and respond to it when called. . You’d be surprised how many don’t.
